Trunk/tail section light

Ever ride at night and get discouraged because you can't see inside the tail secion of your bike? I did, but not anymore!

I purchased a button style pressure switch (usually closed model) from Radio Shack, an inline blade fuse assembly, and a LED assembly from superbriteleds.com.

I made this an "add on" mod so that there is minimal work to be done. In fact, you could go as cheaply as JB Weld on this. I placed the switch along the center spar for the subframe (at the lock plate) and placed a piece of strapping steel around it, then tac welded it into place. You must wire this to a continuously hot wire. If you wanted to take the time to figure out where in the fuse box to connect to, then you could eliminate the extra inline fuse. Mine taps into the memory power wire for the gauges (can't remember which wire it is, tired when posted). You can tap into any ground wire in the tail section or simply ground to the subrame (tapping into a ground wire is best). Be sure to solder everything and cover with heat shrink tubing if you plan on this being permanent. I used quick connectors so the mod could be removed as needed.

This allows for the switch to remain open when the seat or hump is in place. Once unlocked and removed, the led comes on and you can see everything in your tail section. Placement of the LED itself is personal preference. Mine was mounted w/ double sided tape to the bottom of the center spar and aimed down and to the rear of the tail section since this is the most difficult place to see in that part of the tail.

You can adapt this mod to come on when the key is turned on (works great for when you wnat to fake neons) by connecting it to the brake light power wire.

As soon as the bike gets back from the shop w/o the bodywork on it, I'll take pics of this mod so you can see it in action. Here's the link to the LEDs I used:

The bike went in two days early, so if all goes well, I'll pick the cosmetics up Sunday night or Monday morning. Then it's reassembly time and final installation of the LED accenting in the fairing.

We also decided to add the grille work to the fairings and base coat them black with a top coat of the tangerine pearl to darken up the orange a bit.

I'll post pics of the trunk light mod when I get it reassembled this upcoming week. There's also a way to use the license plate light if you have the undertail that requires "flipping" the tail light assembly 180 degrees. Use what you have if you don't add on.

I keep a flashlight in the trunk anyway. It's velcrowed to the under side of the tail section roof above the tail lights inside. But when I had neons I also had a LED light strip wired to a pin switch in the trunk. Only on when pin is released. Key on/off didnt matter.

They come with mounting trac's. Come in different sizes. Just example. Mount a track to the underside of the subframe or the upper sides of the trunk walls on both sides. mount small door pin switch next to locking latch receiver. (like car door pin switch). Lift off seat pin releases turning on light. Enuff light to see airy thing. Mount a seperate one under the driver seat so if you need to see the battery area you can.

This is the smaller one.

Where did you have the tubes mounted and how well did they work? Cool idea on the trunk.
