Things ain't lookin' good for the U.S re Covid19

Not at all Kiwi. Just funnin' ya. The Org rocks as I think and others, best site on the planet. Fix yer bike and yer dishwasher with the same folks.Talk anything and everything.
Now back to the Covid. Rubb.

Incorrect models , poor news agency's.
I'm working, and so is a fair portion of industries here . Restaurants, and offices are the big shutdowns including schools.
We have complete shutdown of all business except essential services.
The streets are empty, its like a doomsday scenario, it is surreal.
Our borders are now shut to all except NZ Citizens and permanent residents returning home. We have thousands left over in other countries (Kiwis travel ALOT)
stranded, unable to get flights, cant afford the airfaires that have skyrocketed in price. One guy paid $15K for a one way ticket home frm the UK. Only 2 first class seats left on the flight... he paid for one... he was happy just to get home.
There is no assurances that our economy will survive this.
We are effectively in Limbo.

One of the major problems in the US currently is a severe lack of testing. We cannot possibly make forecasts with any degree of accuracy until most people have been tested....the media are treating this like they do election coverage.

In discussions over here, (down here?) is if Mr Trump decides its a national disaster type thing and delays/cancels or postpones the election, allowing the idiot as president for longer then the 4yr term.

It seems like about half the population in this city is still working. Essential businesses add up. I see too many customers in for not very essential problems...extra keys, floor mats etc. I hope my small sample is skewed and most people are taking this seriously.

Surely you don't think he'd do that...... do you?

What I find REALLY funny is the complete absence of all the right's complaining about the proposed $2 trillion (yes, trillion, with a T) package. Where are all the"less government spending" and "less government interference" and "socialism is evil" folks?

What I find REALLY funny is the complete absence of all the right's complaining about the proposed $5 trillion (yes, trillion, with a T) package. Where are all the"less government spending" and "less government interference" and "socialism is evil" folks?

Maybe it’s the price they’re willing to pay to aid in his re-election?

I consider myself to fall on the right hand side of politics but there's no way you can leave the situation as is, financially. Spending 2T sucks but you can't leave people out in this manner.
Aside from this we will also be backing mortgage servicers as people start asking for mortgage payment forbearance.
Sucks, but you can't let people go into foreclosure for a forced shut down.

Definitely think the media is a huge part of this hysteria. I hope people wise up to the BS the media is pulling

for a bit of perspective on the hype............259 cases per 1,000,000 of USA population.........and 4 deaths per 1,000,000 OF USA population

I agree, it can't be left alone, the government needs to intervene. I just think it's funny that there's no complaining from the groups who typically bitch and moan about government spending, raising the defecit, want less government intervention etc and scream about how horrible socialism is. This shows me that such folks aren't really against government spending, they're just against the government spending money on things that they themselves don't agree with. And those are two very different things.

OK, so here's my situation, I'm in Day 2 of a minimum 28 day lockdown enforced by Police and Military Nationwide here in NZ
All I have is the internet and news agencies to find out what the hell is going on in different countries regarding the measures the Governments are putting in place to stem the tide of this infectious virus.
I have just read all about the US restrictions on freedom of movement being imposed on US citizens and residents.
So that is the info the news media outlets are releasing . . . then there is social media reports on the situation.
This forum is the ONLY social media platform I am involved with, so it's you guys that I trust and know well enough now that can give me inside information meaning, your point of view on it all.
Is Texas not in lock down @c10?

Their moto is "Never Let A Crisis Go To Waste"
Not exactly an unbiased source...
no.......but the man wanted truth.

The media has done quite a bit of damage in the minute to minute reporting of this creating panic...

A scientist was on TV saying the media needs to back off and slow down...if they reported on the regular flu season with this vigor, nobody would leave their houses and a global shut down would happen every flu season as there are tens to hundreds of thousands of deaths each flu season and we have vaccines for those.
Right. In the 2019-2020 flu season, 250,000 people were hospitalized, and 14k people died in the US from the common flu. That’s more then double then the number of people that have died WORLDWIDE from Covid-19.

Those figures you quoted were for the entire year . . we are only 4 months into this virus pandemic, we will see what the numbers are at the end of the year and then make a comparison . . you may find it's a lot more deaths etc than influenza.

Things are pretty bad Kiwi. What most people don't realize is how much farmland USA has. So the numbers as totals population don't seem that high but first you must take the population per square kilometer in play. USA is 35.7 people per sq km. Italy is 205 people per sq km. So total population is one way to look at it but density calculation will really show you how things are. So in the bad areas like NYC their population per square km is an astounding 66940 people. 365 dead and over 23000 cases. And that's with containment and people quarantined. Imagine the numbers if they didn't. Now take that new number and expand the infection rate to nearby states. It's basically a Resident Evil zombie swarm. Just that the less densely populated areas feel safer, but in the end the zombies get everyone. The actual death rate is higher. Not because of the virus but of regular life and death illnesses. Things that could have been prevented with a ER visit some pills and rest will now take your life because there is nobody available to treat you.
