When you consider that about 9 million people in the world die every year from hunger, (which is completely preventable), losing 5000 to a virus seems less important.
This is starting to sound similar to reactions people have to news coverage of terrorist attacks. Terrorism is something to be aware of even though it's about the same likelihood that you'll be struck by lightening as be a victim of terrorism. There's no reason to spend a lot of energy trying to protect yourself from something that is that unlikely to happen to you. Other things like avoiding getting run over by a bus are a lot more pressing.
