One of the advantages of being local to the east end of Long Island is that we can get to see some cool stuff. The town of Greenport hosts a tall ships event most years and usually on the Memorial Day holiday weekend. This year was no exception and was one of the bigger events in recent years. We make it a point to not leave the house if we dont have to when the tourists invade the east end but got lucky and some of the ships were still in port today. I thought I'd share a few pics of them for you guys and gals.

The first one here is The Pride of Baltimore, at least thats what their flag said

It was tied up across the port from the other ships and apparently has a nasty habit of firing their cannon when entering or leaving port. No one bothered to tell us this before they fired it on the way out

The other two ships were tied up on another dock, one on either side of a local seafood spot. Keep in mind there were over 50,000 people that "invaded" the east end for the weekend, mostly for this event and there was some other thing going on in town too. There was no freaking way we were going into town during the height of the event

This is the Bounty. It was used in the Pirates movie series and was built for the movie the Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlo Brando in the 60s. Some local rich dude bought it and sails it all over the world. Well he doesn't, apparently he's never on it but the boat sails everywhere and even has a summer camp on it

Of course I know you guys love pics and things actually being used, so here's a few of them as they came around the point and headed up the sound past our house. They said they were heading to Newburgh NY tonight, so any of you guys upstate that want to go see them, they are coming your way

These were taken as they came through the channel and past our yard heading west up the sound. The fog over the sound helped hide CT nicely

The 5th picture down has a decent view of Plum Island behind it. Thats the DHS (among other alphabet groups) site that you dont dare try to go to without prior approval and escort. Its got some cool stuff over there from a historic standpoint but you dont want to try and go unannounced

There ain't no way I would ever get on one of them ships. You never know where the Chuck Norris of the sea is (Mobey ****).

Man I love old ships like that. Seeing one in color gives a good idea of duh what it looked like two hundred years ago as the new world was just being discovered. Kinda like an Iroquois looking out in amazement....wtf...is that!

Lots of hush hush projects and testing out there.

those are some cool pics, thanks for sharing...i think it would be fun to take a trip on one of those and learn the basics of how it all works :beerchug:

Considering they have standing shoot to kill orders for any mammals that touch land outside of the "supposed to be here" category, umm yeah there's something cooking out there. The fact that they have the only living hoof and mouth disease strain in the USA accounts for the shoot to kill orders. If someone were to get on the island and somehow track that stuff onto an airplane they said the US cattle population would be destroyed

Its been the source of many a book and movie. I think the Hannible movie was supposed to be based off it. Lots of really cool history out there, maybe if they do actually sell the island the public can go see whats there

 my wife says im too old.

hmm, I've see pix you've posted and I saw the crew. There's some guys on there that looked like they could have been original crew on the very first HMS Bounty....in the 1700s

That being said, there were a LOT of 20 somethings on there both men and women. I wonder if they have fraternization rules on ships like this

No USS Constitution  Great share, I don't know if old iron sides ever leaves Boston, was an active US naval vessel back in the day.
