Tachometer accuracy and rev limiter

I am pretty careful about avoiding the red zone on my bike. But the other day I was accelerating hard through first, with my mind on surrounding traffic, and before I knew it I was 400 to 500 rpm into the red zone. I have a couple of questions about this:

- Why didn't the rev limiter kick in as soon as I hit redline?
- I have heard Suzuki tachs are optimistic. Is this true? Is 11,000 on the tach really 11,000?
- What effect will the occasional trip into the red zone have on engine longevity? Is the occassional trip into the red zone gonna wreck the engine?

Rev limits are always well on the safe side for production vehicles - I wouldn't worry about bouncing off the limiter unless the crank has been lightened, in which case change up before hitting the limiter as crank whip/flex could cause a fatigue failure.
