how easy is this?
do I need to do anything prior other than unscrewing the old one and putting the new one on?

No, maybe drain a little oil out becuase it may leak a little depending on your oil level. Keep in mind you will be fighting the magnetic force of the rotor on the crank when you pull it off. You might think something is wrong, its not. Just get all the bolts off the cover and remove it.

When you swap the stator into the now cover, use some loctite on the bolts that you remove.

If you use stands you shouldn't lose much oil.

have fun with the plug thats on the side... might need some encouragement to come loose but you'll get it, otherwise, pretty easy swap out

Careful you don't get you finger pinched from the "magnetic" force reinstalling it.
