BMW then Hayabusa
Fun to ride - BMW 9.0 - Busa 8.4
Quality - 9.4 - 8.7
Instruments and controls 9.1 - 8.7
Ergonomics 9.0 - 8.4
Chassis and handling 8.8 - 8.3
Suspension 9.2 - 8.2
Brakes 8.8 - 8.3
Transmission 8.8 - 8.8
Engine power 9.5 - 9.0
Engine-power delivery 9.3 - 8.8

Total 90.0 - 85.6

They really do make my aspiring bike out to be garbage, except for the 'silky smooth transmission' and the top speed. (And even those weren't enough to merit a 'win')

This column has no effect on my purchase next spring, but it does irk me that they make the Hayabusa seem like some antiquated POS.

Furthermore, is it really true that the first thing I should do when I get a Busa is to toss on steel brake cables (was going to anyway since default won't reach with both bar risers) and new rotors and pads?

Yeah, where is the cost comparison? Hmm, $10-11K or $24K or whatever it is.

Yes, steel lines are great but not required unless you really ride hard and super spirited or track days. I have original rotors (4 years now) and have replaced pads once. It's about time for them again.

Apples to Oranges....The Busa is a SPORT-TOUR, the BMW is a liter bike.
Kinda like a Camaro to Ferrari comparo.

It's a proper comparo. You're thinking of the new BMW S1000RR. The K1300S isn't it. It's BMW's Hyperbike.

As for futher numbers...

Price of the BMW (as tested) $17,500. Busa $13,199
Weight 569wet - 583wet
Quarter mile BMW 10.46@137.6 - Busa 9.96@145.8
Roll Ons
BMW 60-80/2.71 sec - Busa 60-80/2.98 sec
BMW 80-100/2.82 sec - Busa 80-100/3.07sec

BMW HP/Torque 146.8@9250/89.6@8000
Busa HP/Torque 164.8@9500/97.6@8500

Pros
BMW - Comfy -Well balanced chasis
Busa - Top end power is still outrageous - Drivetrain is silky smooth (but not smooth enough to get the nod in that area, I guess.)
X- We never expected the giant killer to come from BMW

Cons
BMW - Pricey - Heavier than it feels
Busa - Brakes need a major overhaul - Feels like it's missing some low end torque
X-The Hayabusa is showing its age...

^The S1000RR is what you were thinking or the K1300S is what you were thinking? The K1300S is a BMW Busa/ZX-14. They've even said so. Long, 'Heavy' 1200+cc sport bike designed for liter~ish performance without the backaches, made to be ridden longer distances with greater comfort.
