Spectacular California Highway 1

Well, we put on over 1,000 miles in those 2.5 days. From SD, we headed north to get through the Friday 7/6/07 morning rush-hour traffic. I don't know why they call it 'rush' hour. No one seems to be rushing anywhere and it definitely takes longer than an hour. But I digress.

AAAAaaaaannnnyway...

We stopped for breakfast at Calabasas. I'll never eat at another Coco's. 'nuf said.

From there we headed eastward through the desert/mountain terrain for several hours of spectacular twisties and high-speed sweepers across the rocky and golden landscape. By the time we headed west toward Santa Maria, the temperature had reached 113F. Toasty in all that leather, to say the least. After reaching Highway 101 in Santa Maria, we headed north toward Morro Bay...arriving around 4pm. We showered then walked to the town center where we had a tasty meal at the All American Fishing Company (or something like that). We walked around the shops for awhile, talked to a local who rides a Speed Triple (blah blah blah), had some ice cream, then, exhausted, headed back to the hotel.

At 6:00 the next morning, we headed north again toward Big Sur. I kept calling it "Ben Hur" or "Big Ben" (in fun, of course). The 'marine layer' was heavy, so it seemed a bit 'drizzley' out. After half an hour of that, though, the air dryed out but it was still overcast. We made our way from Highway 101 to Highway 1 and enjoyed the breathtaking views.

Uh-oh...I have a meeting to get to. More on this later.

Great pics.

(Scar @ Jul. 09 2007,10:00) Well, you asked for 'em, Lamb.

Here ya go.  What a great time.

Hopefully we can find some other west-coast 'busa owners for the next ride...someone reported to me that everyone on this forum is on the east coast, which is surprising to me...but it explains a lot.

Anyway, here are a collection of my favorite pics.  Many more exist, but I wouldn't want to bore the other-coasties with the phenomenal scenery out here.

Not quite. Its just a little warm (113) in the inland empire this time of year.
Just so you know...one of the most famous Busa riders on the planet ....Tim from Pashnit.com.... resides in CA and on this board.
You ain't seen nuthin yet brother

If your going to MotoGP you'll be able to hook up with a couple dozen board members. Do a search for Kento-Motos motogp post and get wired in.
And if you ever get up here to the Sierra Gold country....boy do we have some roads to feed your Busa

Hey, Cosmo...I know Tim through his writing on Pashnit. (which means neither quite personally nor biblically)... Great site, no?

I dig his site, but seem to spend more time here...

So, back to the trip.

Work meetings are sometimes a necessary evil, though I tend to refer to them as "yawn-a-thons"...or "nappy-time".

Let's see...where was I...oh, yes...breathtaking views.

We meandered up the coast. There was no hurry, nor were there any prizes to win for anything. Andrew had scheduled lunch with his sister at "Nepenthe", (www.nepenthebigsur.com) a restaurant touting spectacular views, exhorbitant prices, mediocre food, and disinterested service. So, we had plenty of time to get where we were going. Shelley would be driving down from East Bay (SF). In fact, we were 90 minutes early for the meet-up time, so we continued north. By this time, the marine layer had been pushed off the coast by the warmth of the sun, which provides for far nicer photography...and we commenced the ritual "un-layering" of the morning gear. When we were half-an-hour north of our destination location, we turned around and headed south so we could have our Photo Moments and be on-time for food. We stopped at three Vista Points for our photo-ops. At the last of them, the third one, just as we were gearing-up to head toward the restaurant, who pulls into the Vista Point (?)...well, none other than Andrew's sister, Shelley. The odds of her pulling into the same Vista Point as us are infinitessimally small... yet...there she was (with her boyfriend, Eric, much to our dismay). Again, I digress.

So Jim and I headed south in advance to secure a table for the five of us while Andrew escorted his sister's vehicle to the restaurant. We ate lunch together, took a few pictures, then went our separate ways. It was nice to meet them...

I secretly wished Shelley and Eric had been fellow 'busa riders who had read my invitation post and contacted me for the lunch-time meet-up. Well, sometimes your hopes and dreams are dashed upon the rocks like the ever-pounding waves of the ocean. Bastards.

We got on the road heading south again 'til we reached Ragged Point, the heinously expensive yet well-kept tourist trap we had discovered while heading north. We stopped in bought 1 gallon of gas ($4.79/gal) so that we could make it to cheaper territory. We had a $7 slice of cheesecake and a $5 cup of hot chocolate. A few more photographs were snapped and off we went...back down the coast. Past Hearst Castle at San Simeon, the Sea Lions were basking, but the tide was coming back in. They seemed restless; maybe 'cause the water is cold. Anyway, the waves crashing on the rocks added it's own type of drama to the afternoon sunshine.

We made it back to our hotel in Morro Bay around 5:30 p.m. Headed out for dinner, then walked some of it off before migrating back to the hotel.

At 6:30 Sunday morning, we met up in the lobby, packed and ready to hit the road. We went to our favorite breakfast spot (Hungry Fisherman; highly recommended for all the right reasons), fueled up, then got on the 1/101/405 toward San Diego. Andrew peeled off the route at the 76 where we met him on Friday morning. Jim and I arrived at 1:30 p.m., where we promptly stopped in at the fave Schezuan restaurant.

After depositing the 'luggage', we washed and waxed the road-grimey bikes then headed our separate ways to enjoy an evening of well-earned vegetating. It was vegetablicious (a word I just made up).

So, that's that. Hope you enjoyed the story and the pics.

I cannot imagine a better-spent $300.

Sweet write-up! Providing more time for others to make plans to join you on your rides (especially ones this long) might increase the action from this site! Looks like a great time! Tons of miles and thanks for the pics.....................neighbor!

Y a r r~ Ahoy, neighbor. Glad you enjoyed the 'read'. You're right...I suppose that a weeks notice wouldn't be enough for most folks.

Will try to do better next time, my leige. A thousand pardons.

This is a trip that will be re-taken 2-3 times annually. Maybe someday it can become something of a pilgrimmage.

Hm.

No there are plenty on the left coast...we just need more than 3 or 4 days notice

What? I have to apologize again? (j/k)

Indeed, of the volume of brethren 'busa owners on the correct coast, I am acutely aware.

However...I (WAS) (<--emphasis) told otherwise. ...and I ain't no dummy.

Anyway, as I mentioned, I'll give more notice next time.

In the interim, I'll spank myself silly for not being more accommodating...

ROFLMAO.

Enjoy the day, ya'llz.

Scar~
