Not sure if this belongs in another forum, but because of my 'other' job, I get the fatality reports from the Army's Combat Readiness Center.  A bunch of them are motorcyle, this one a Busa..

What a shame, survived deployment only to get killed on a bike.

ARMY PRELIMINARY LOSS REPORT 08161POM ACCIDENT CLAIMS ONE SOLDIER'S LIFE
*        This is the 38th <https://crcapps3.crc.army.mil/plrdocs/PLR08161_Summer08.pdf>  off-duty fatality during the 2008 "101 Critical Days of Summer Campaign." <https://crc.army.mil/Multimedia/detail.asp?iData=144&iCat=718&iChannel=19&nChannel=Multimedia>
*        There were 44 <https://crcapps3.crc.army.mil/plrdocs/PLR08109Summer07.pdf>  off-duty fatalities during the campaign in 2007.

A 6th Ranger Battalion, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, Soldier was killed in a motorcycle accident on 9 August 2008 at approximately 0030 local in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.  The 28-year-old SSG was riding his 2008 Suzuki Hayabusa at a high rate of speed when he attempted to negotiate a curve and lost control.  The Soldier crossed the median, struck the curve, was ejected; hit a sign and two parked vehicles.  The Soldier was pronounced dead at the scene.  The SSG was not wearing a helmet or other PPE.  The Soldier was licensed and had taken the MSF course in March 2008.  The Soldier redeployed OIF in February 2008.  A Centralized Accident Investigation (CAI) team from the US Army Combat Readiness Center is investigating.  Local News <https://crc.army.mil/redirectwithurl.asp?http://www.nwfdailynews.com/news/fhp_10098___article.html/crash_beal.html>

Discussion Points
*        So far this FY we have lost Six Leaders (1 CPL, 3 SSGs, 1 SFC, and a CW5) in motorcycle accidents who were not wearing helmets.
*        Are there ways our unit/installation can address the desire for excitement demonstrated by high speed riding?

Including this accident, there have been 47 <https://crcapps3.crc.army.mil/plrdocs/PLR08161POM.pdf>  Class A POM accidents in FY08 compared to 34 for the same time frame in FY07.  These 47 accidents resulted in 43 fatalities compared to 31 Soldier deaths for the same time frame in FY07.  This PLR does not identify specific root causes of this incident as the investigation is ongoing.  Further details will be available at a later date on RMIS Quick Search <https://crcapps3.crc.army.mil/rmisquick/adhoc/>  (AKO Login Required).

Preliminary Loss Reports (PLR) are For Official Use Only and are to provide leaders with awareness of Army loss as we experience it and to point out potential trends that affect our combat readiness.

Was he a member of hayabusa.org?

Sigh.  I wish he had been wearing his helmet.  We get chewed out for now wearing head gear or the damn beret in this mans army. Why slack now.  RIP bro.

thats terrible news, prayers sent RIP, in reading the report they have lost 6 leaders, and none of them were wearing gear, what a shame, although my best friends son did not survive his crash with gear on, you still have to give yourself a fighting chance out there....

Sorry to hear. Have had a lot of folks returning from deployment and deciding that a motorcycle was the thing to have. Seems like he intended to do the right thing, but not knowing all the details seems like he got in over his head.

RIP SSG, and my prayers go out to his family... unfortunatly his family may have to deal with the "line of duty determination" and may not recieve a dime from the govt because he failed to wear a helmet. DOD mandates that ALL ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY will wear a helmet on or off base 24/7/365.

EXACTLY.

If this is the wrong forum to post this, admins pls let me know. I saw an accident forum, but nobody is reading it apparently. Seemed this was better place to post in the hope that it stops and makes ONE rider think.

Dang it, As a Rider Coach I hate to hear this. We enforce the need for protective gear throughout all classes. Unfortunately we can not make the decision after the fact. RIP rider. Sucks. Hope others learn so his passing is not in vain.

R.I.P.

An addition to your concern about gear:
Statistics show that people who have sustained a concussion are more likely than the rest of the population to sustain a subsequent head injury.
The rate of concussions in returning vets is extremely high.

Let's remind others, not just ourselves, about the importance of protective gear
That's not limited to helmets!!!!
I had hand surgery a few years back after, of all things, a cat bite!
My left hand was completely out of commission for six months.
Not good for a computer geek.

Head, fingers, toes.. it's all worth more than the bucks it costs to protect with adequate gear!!!
(Lineman's boots are not adequate!)

My prayers goes out to the family! Last weekend I went to SC with the family and saw guys riding without helmets. I've seen it before but this time it made me shake!!!

R.I.P Brother!!!

I know what it is like coming back from a combat zone. I got back from my 2nd tour in Viet Nam and bought the fastest bike I could find. I think that is very common, but what a shame. I was lucky to get away with crazy riding then with no gear. I will not go around the block now without a helmet. RIP buddy.
