setting front preload?

I have the hardest time telling if the amount of lines are equal setting on both forks. Even with a flashlight shining it's hard to read the adjustment s are sunk in that little circular cave. Is there an easy way to verify the front pre-load? On my SV, the bolts were above the forks so it was easy.

The key for me was to hold my head at the same distance and same angle, one at a time - since the bike was on the side stand.
