Rolling start quesiton

Had a great day of riding here. Weather was perfect and I spent most of the day enjoying it. Went down and rode the national forest with Semperfi who graciously guided myself and my cousin through the area. I definitely need more time down there as most of my riding experience has been on flat roads and it showed as I did my best to run down a black 08 for much of the afternoon. :beerchug:

Question I have is from the ride back home. As my cousin and I got closer to our hometown we started playing. He's got a black 07 which he has lowered and cut down the stock cans on. I have a white/silver 06 LE with Yoshi Carbon slip ons and a power commander.

We came out of a small town where the speed limit was 40 and we both hit it from a 40mph roll on. We held neck and neck until third gear where he proceeded to pull away from me in a very noticeable manner. Of course the first time was fun enough we slowed and hit it several more times as we had the road to ourselves. Every time we would hold together neck and neck until we hit third and then he would pull away. It didn't matter if we started from first or second and it didn't matter if I shifted at 9k or redlined, when we would hit third he would leave me.

I've got about 50lbs on him but I'm thinking if it was the weight of the riders then first and second gear would have showed that as well. When we made it back to my house we were talking about it and he was shifting same as I was.

Anyone got any ideas why he ran off so easily in third gear?

Its because he has an 07, Just be glad it wasnt Maroon you would have noticed it through all the gears. Ohhhhhh did I mention I have a Maroon 07

well you know the 50# HAS to come into play. The only question is why not in 1st or 2nd. My theory would be 50# in that torque range isn't enough to see yet.

He could have more horse power than you too. His 3rd gear map could also be better. Even if he has no pc but you do yours could be a little lean or rich right there.

Am I correct in assuming you both have stock sprockets?

yes, sprockets are stock on both bikes. I also agree map could be a bit different for that gear, had not considered that yet

+1

Mapping may be different in third.

weight.... as you get higher in the gears it makes more and more difference... more speed in weight loss than HP on these bikes unless you are going turbo..

loose the weight..

Now if you are going to learn to ride the corners... do not even worry about it... fast through the hills only has little to do with the power or acceleration..

"Ahhh-foooey"...... Re-map and challenge again young Jedi....yes #50 is #50 but c'mon now....open the throttle all the way next time and ride it like ya stole it and are being chased by the cops... :super: Sounds like you're running rich in third....too rich... :oldcool:

Been to a drag strip ? You'll always see these 150 lb. guys on stock bikes just killing other more powerfull bikes with the 6'2 210 lb. guys.

Almost as bad as going to see the Doc. Doc has been telling me to lose a few lbs, now I'm disappointed he didn't tell me to do it to go faster or I would've listened a little more

Makes good sense to me and I figured it has some effect just wasn't sure how much or if there was another underlying cause. Probably a combination if the truth were known, between that and map, etc. etc.

This also poses another question.

Would a TRE make any difference? Anyone running one have any opinions as to whether or not they add any performance to the bike? I've been looking at adding one of the Gear Based Controllers with TRE from Smithabusa. I'm wanting the gear indicator but figure might as well get it with a TRE while I'm at it.

Thoughts anyone?

Some bikes just run stronger than others. You can take a half dozen bikes off the shelf and you'll usually find one that just runs stronger than the others. Your 50 pounds of extra weight don't help you any either.

Try swaping bikes and see if your buddy can still out pull you? Then you'll know if it's you are the bike?

lose the extra LBS. its cheaper than buying horsepower

there is no way around it, i know from experience. at the dragstrip it is easier to see, if i put a lighter guy on my bike a can see a 10mph increase in top speed, same bike, same setup, same day....the bike is just carrying less weight.

A number of different factors here, really...

He's lowered and lighter, which equates to less air resistance and of course, less weight to move. At 100+ the air resistance can be substantial enough to give him an advantage.

The '08 is also porkier by itself, being I think 7lbs heavier than the old one? It also has different gears, but I forget just now whether they are taller or shorter.

Tuning can also play a big part of it, as you have an updated computer that may be negating what the PC is doing.

What gear were the bikes in @ 40mph. Roll on could be first or 2nd?
