Repainting Exhaust

I need to repaint the mid-pipes on my exhaust. Any suggestions on paint/coatings? Not sure what to use,1200 degree paint from the local parts store seems cheesy.

I didn't care for the way my header turned from black to a dark gray soon after I bought the bike, so I took it off last winter and gave it to a friend of mine to be ceramic-coated.  It came out a beautiful black that turned charcoal gray right away...  As it turns out, that's what Suzuki coats them with in the first place.

My friend told me that powdercoating would not stand up under the heat, so if I were to do it over, I'd go with the ceramic but change the color - light gray, silver or even gold if it matched something else on the bike like the calipers or fork tubes.

so I thru the fuggin' thing out....

An' installed the stainless mid-pipe that comes on the 01 an' after Busa. Big diff. Looks cool. Retain stock set-up.

Together with the "Rubbah Polished stock cans" it looks awesome.

Those are the stock cans? Woah... I want to do the same to mine, since they have some scratches. Can you explain me how to do that? It's cheaper than buying new cans!!

you better be sure you are ready for some tired hands and fingers. It took me around 5 or 6 hours per can and mine aren't as good as RSD's. His stuff looks great!

Maybe you should've used a thing (which i don't know the name in english) that usually we attack to the driller and that makes the polishing work... I won't do manually for sure ;)

Anyway, can you tell me how the polishing works? What are the procedures? I am going to do that and save the money I was going to spend on two cans to put later on, a full high mount system... but for now it'd be great to give the Busa a new look and get rid of the scratches on the cans.

I think I started with a 150 grit sandpaper to get that grooved finish off the cans first. Then you work on to like 200 grit, 400, 600, finer and finer til there are no more scratches. I also used some fine grit steel woll towards the end then buffed it out with medium buffing compound then a jewelers rouge.

JET-Hot Makes a "Sterling" Ceramic composite that is supposed to be the cats ass. I am going to be doing my headers and midpipes here eventually. Check out their web-site, looks to be some top notch shid and gives your pipes a Psuedo Chrome look. They also have colors available. As a Bonus the coating should last about forever and it reduces under hood/plastic temps by about 50%. No shid...

Don't know if the measurements are the same, but I started with a 60 grit, and i'm going to buy a machine to help me do it, since I was working for half an hour and the grooved finish was still there. 1st phase will be done with that machine, after the groove finish is out, then I will do a manual work to get rid of the scratches, and then near the end I'm thinking about buying a Dremel (pretty expensive here, costs about $115 w/15 acessories) to make them shine

Just a bit of advise, when i polished mine I used an orbitla sander all the way up until 2000 grit. it was fast, but it leaves a haze on the alum that takes forever to hand polish or even buff out with a wheel. My suggestion would be to maby maching sand until 1000 wet, then got with 1200 1500 and 200 all by hand going the same direction. this will cause you not to have that haze and make the final polish alot easier. Just my opinion.

Yeah, that's a good suggestion. I have half of the work done, but by this time i think that the 1st part of the work has to be done quickly... it's very hard to get rid of the grooves. I've done it already. 2nd part is a test to our patience, more than a physical test. I'm going right now to buy the grit 1200 and 1500, and guess it's enough then. We'll see how things go. I will post my experience here when it's finished. The can I'm polishing had some "deep" scratches and it's hard to get rid of them, but I will do my best, even if some stay there, they will be less noticeable.

some more hours of work... tomorrow i'll try to polish the first can. it still has some small haze, 'cause i used a mechanical instrument to take the grooves off... but it's not bad at all. if i wanted perfection, i'd go to a specialist... so, if my final work is good I'll be happy, if it's great, then I'm on business

maybe tomorrow i'll post some pics, if I manage to finish it. you can't imagine guys, how hard is to find the material for the work here...

I have an akrapovic slipon on my R1. I lowsided this spring and scuffed it up pretty good. I sanded out the scratches and took the midpipe to a local powder coating shop and they put a semigloss black ceramic coating on it that is good to 1200 degrees. Cost me about $70 though.

looks nice

but for the Busa I really think that black cans don't help the beauty of the beast...

Listen to uncle Rev!

Jet hot coating is an aluminum ceramic that is the schnizzle my nizzle!

I have only positive experience with it. I coats on the inside and the outside of the pipe. It is polished on both sides (in and out) so it will increase exhause velocity as well.

It's the only way to fly!

Why am I not american

?!?! You guys have EVERYTHING!!!! I've searched 10+ stores in just to find a simple wax or "soap" to polish the cans and haven't found it yet!!!!! The Jet-Hot should be a MUST, but I guess in here I'll have to stick with another idea...

Because by and large Americans are Boorish Assh*les and if the whole world were American it would be nothing but BS strip malls and Semi Intelligent NASCAR Fans wearing belt buckles and drivig SUV's Man.... That would suck...

See the World needs Europe to serve as a reminder that culture does exist and that having a little class isn't impossible.

That is why you are not an American...

Don't get me wrong folks, I Love my Country, I love America, and I am still sworn to defend Her, and I will... It's just a lot of Americans that I could do without... Hell, some of them in my own family...
