Rebuilt 02 Busa

Has anyone here ever rebuilt a "total loss" Busa and re-registered it with their DMV?

I bought a perfectly good 02 Busa ($1000) that was declared a total loss by USAA. (It belonged to a buddy of mine).

He had a 25mph wreck riding to a Military Safety Stand-down (LOL!). Car in front of him hit the brakes (they were on a small bridge) and he swerved to avoid but ended up clipping the corner of the car with the cowling.

Insurance company totalled it based on the cost of replacing the cowlings.

He bought it back from USAA but they would only issue a Certificate of Destruct title, which means it could only be used for parts. So he bought used cowlings off of Ebay and decided to take it to the Bonneville Salt Flats to play. Bike operated fine at max speed. Now he has orders out of Florida so decided to get rid of it.

I called the DMV compliance Inspector who told me I could get a ASPT title (Assembled from parts) but 75% of the bike had to replaced.

Course I told her how stupid that sounded & she said she didn't make the policy.

She sent me all the required forms and now I need reciepts showing I had replaced that magical 75% to include the sellers name, address and phone #. No problem thought I as there are many people I know. After getting another e-mail from the same lady, now she's telling me they also want the VIN# where the parts came from!

So now I have to "acquire" VIN# for the wheels, forks, gas tank/rear fender section & motor.

But I can use the existing frame, they will just give me a new VIN# on a sticker.

The bike is all together and runs fine! So they think I'm gonna tear it all apart just to re-assemble it from other peoples parts? Ridiculous...

Any ideas?

Would they accept reciepts from ebay for the parts, I've got about 2 entire bikes worth or more, this one is '02 frame & forks, '07 body, '06 everything else. Also 'totaled' just from body damage

That is a sweet looking ride! Hope to have mine looking that good once I get the paperwork figured out.

It also has a Pingel electric shifter, a PC III and extra exhaust set. Gotta remove all the stickers and safety wire he had to put on for the Bonneville Tech inspection.

Similar situation happened to me after an accident. had to do a vehicle inspection and the lady asked me what happened, so I showed her the letter from the insurance company explaining it was declared totaled. She asked what I did to fix it and I said I replaced the bodywork. She then asked for the receipt(s) and said they needed to comply with a state bill of sale form which required a VIN #. I thought it was a little strange, but got everything together and to make a long story short she actually ran both my VIN # and the VIN # of the bike I had listed on the bill of sale. Not sure what she would have done if it had been a number from another salvege bike, but it certainly seemed like a big headache for at least in my case something very minor.

It just seems like a major PITA... I've got all the DMV forms, I just need reciepts showing where I got all the "replaced" parts..

So she ran the other VIN# to see if the donor bike was stolen?

I'm assuming that's why she ran it. Either that or that it had a clean title.

I have a buddy who has a custom built bike, from the frame up(cough cough),,I cant think off the top of my head what exactly he did to get it regitered but when the FBI showed up at his house there was nothing they could do because he had all the paperwork needed for it..there is some kind of issuence for custom bikes because there are no vin#s..just damn pieces put together..i will speak to him and get back

In Florida, the DMV will issue a new VIN# which is a clear sticker they put on your frame, the model will be 2008 ASPT (Assembled from Parts).

Once I get the paperwork & receipts I call the DMV Compliance Inspector's office and schedule an appointment.

Then trailer it down there and they will check the number on the frame / motor and make sure it's safe to ride and I have all the papers in order.

After that I get issued the new title & VIN.

S-R Racing,

When ou built your bikes, did your receipts for the parts have to show the VIN of the donor bike?

Just the motor and frames require complete documents (title, bill of sale, etc.) the rest only require proper proof of ownership,so I make copys of the listing and my paypal receipts. After the first couple bikes, I've also developed a good relationship with my local inspectors. When they saw I had pictures of everything and a file on every bike for every nut & bolt I've bought, they still check everything out,but it seems to go much smoother

After all this time, I have finally gotten my son's Busa ready for the road! Here's some pics...

P.S.

John, just noticed your ride on the monitor in the background... LOL!

You could sell the current frame with paperwork for $1500-2000 and then buy a clear title frame for not much more off of Psychobike.com or Ebay. Then you won't have the headaches and you'll be able to get full coverage on the bike with a clear titled frame.

Anybody else out there have a 02 Blue & Black? Not sure how big of sticklers their going to be down at the Compliance Inspection about the "75%" thing.

DMV regs I've read are seemingly up to interpretation with statements like "or any one part"...

Think it would matter if I told them the tank is original or should I get a receipt to show them I replaced it?

Gotta take the paperwork down first and surrender the Destruct Title along with all the receipts and then they will schedule an appt to bring the bike to them for an inspection on the 15th.

Did you have any problems with the paperwork? Did NH allow you to take the bike and papers down at the same time?

Bad enough I have to take off work not one but two days to get this done.

I'm hoping like crazy there aren't any issues... My sons been waiting almost a year to the date to finally be able to ride this bike (other than around the block)...

After being on this forum and seeing all these Busa's, I'm really thinking hard about getting one for myself!

But mine would be stretched, lowered and turbo-charged...
