My buddy recently purchased his 2005 hayabusa and the is a lot of bounce in the rear seat. We are looking at tightening the rear shock. My question is are they know for needing replacement after several years? What are the next things we should look at? He is 150lbs suited up.

You NEED to set the suspension sag!
This is a must for any sportbike with adjustable suspension.
Sag is set with the rider on the bike.
At 150lbs, the suspension should work well enough for his weight.
And yes, shocks can be rebuilt, revalved, recharged.

If it is doing alot of bouncing going down the road then as Sixpack said adjust sag first. Excessive travel is usually more the result of the compression and rebound out of adjustment. The thing is sag has to be set first.

If you just tighten the rear spring, you will only make the ride very stiff.
At 150lbs, there should only be about 2 threads visible above the top lock ring.
And use/buy a good spanner wrench.
A punch and hammer will do the job, but will beat up the lock rings in the process.
