GALVESTON "â€￾ One woman died early Saturday morning in the first major accident involving participants in this year's Lone Star Motorcycle Rally.

The woman, who has not been identified pending notification of next of kin, was riding on the back of a motorcycle traveling northbound on Interstate 45 through La Marque about 2:30 a.m. when she apparently fell off the back. She was run over by a Scion compact car just before the FM 519 exit.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorcycle's driver, Houston resident Jason Michael McKey, 31, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, said Sgt. Shawn Spruill with the La Marque Police Department.

Spruill would not release any information about McKey's relationship to his passenger.

McKey was still in custody Saturday night awaiting other charges, Spruill said. his bond was set at $1,500. The driver of the Scion was not cited.

Another man, 38-year-old Calvin R. Gunnell, was also arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated Saturday after he struck a woman somewhere on the island's West End about 3 a.m.

First Assistant District Attorney Joel Bennett did not know the circumstances of the accident, including what types of vehicles Gunnell and the unidentified woman were driving.

The woman was transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch in critical condition. Bennett said further charges were pending based on the accident investigation and the woman's condition.

City Spokeswoman Alicia Cahill did not have any additional information about the accident.

Two motorcycle riders also were transported to medical branch hospitals later in the day after an accident that shut down traffic on FM 3005 in both directions for more than an hour.

About 3:30 p.m., an unidentified man driving a motorcycle southbound on 8 Mile Road ran into an unidentified woman driving her motorcycle westbound on FM 3005. The woman's husband, who was driving his own bike near his wife's, was not involved in the accident.

The woman and her motorcycle landed in the westbound lanes. The man, who according to witness accounts was not wearing a helmet, ended up in the eastbound lanes.

Other accidents sent several motorcycle drivers to the hospital, but none had life-threatening injuries.

Between midday Wednesday and 7 p.m. Friday, 104,000 vehicles had traveled over the causeway to the island, according to city traffic counters, said Galveston Spokeswoman Alicia Cahill. By 1 p.m. Saturday, another 34,000 vehicles had driven onto the island.

Cahill said officials estimated between 80 to 90 percent of the traffic was for the rally.

Only one rally attendee was arrested on Friday for spinning his tires in a prohibited burnout area downtown.

Statistics for arrests and citations on Saturday were unavailable by press

That is tragic, fell off and run over! Dont drink and ride people!

i saw the site where the bike on bike happened, and another accident site right near my pad.
both had blood stains circled and other markings like point of impact and skid marks (i dont believe cops do all that unless it looks really bad for the victim). i got a feeling the death toll will rise as the injured linger.
but statistically even 3 or 4 deaths aint bad considering turnout
