Racing School

Went to Michele Mercier's (3 time Canadian National Superbike Champion) "FAST" Racing School, phase 1 at Shannonville Raceway Ontario last Wednesday. It consisted of 1 1/2 hrs of theory followed by about 8 track sessions - about 4 laps each. Got to pick between Gixxer 600, R6, SV650, Ninja600, Kawi 650 twin. They provided Joe Rocket leathers and Arai helmets. Naturally, I chose the Gixxer. It felt so tiny compared to the Busa and you could really throw it around the corners and handled it beautifully. During the first couple of sessions we followed an instructor to learn the track and the "race line". As we progressed, instructors would watch us from the corners and provide a debrief following the session. Later, we followed the instructors again at a fast pace to really test what we learned. They had a professional photographer taking pictures but from where he was shooting, the bikes weren't leaning over very far so I opted out of buying any photos. The school is booked up for the rest of the season but I have my name on a waiting list in case of a cancellation. Bike, instruction, protective gear, and damage insurance for $600. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun!

I've said this before but I really want to try this sometime soon. I've looked at a couple of track web sites but I can't find where it says anything about bike track days or bike schools. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place.

Try calling your closest race track or look on line to see if they offer any race courses. There are three tracks within about 100 miles of my location offering track days. There are also organizations that sponsor track days such as "PRO 6". Go on line search key word "Track Days". Here's one I found for the US http://www.sportbiketracktime.com/
