question about tire pressure...

OK, I'm not a nuclear physics guy or nuttin fancy like that.  But...

Tires are not an inelastic volume like a SCUBA tank.  (Don't yell at me!)

The contact patch is a flat spot that changes the volume of the tire.  As the pressure increases, the contact patch gets smaller (That's why 1/4 mile guys lower theyr'es).

At some pressure, you will reach a point of diminishing returns.  Where the weight of bike & rider will not make the contact patch any bigger.

In my humble, undoccumented, unresearched, uncalculated opinion, this will be the recommended pressure.

I run the recommended pressure because I find the bike gets a tad loose in the corners with less.

From what I understand/have heard,  Anything under 25psi in the drag strip will slow you down.

Flame on friends!

I need to have closure to this subject, cuz I have wondered this myself. I am down with the contact patch thing that MikeyD says, and am down with Strk00s physics stuff cuz I am dumb redneck that don't know any better. So, anyone got more to add?

PS i normally ride street tires (michelin HPXs), 37 psi front 38 psi rear, just seems to work for me the best.
