Piston damage

So in looking closer at the pistons I pulled out of the motor, I found something interesting. All of them had lost pieces off the top of the piston. I don’t know if this is common, but it seems like the area where the valve cutout is, is too close to the edge of the piston. That’s my uneducated thought. Anyone else?

These were JE 84mm pistons.

I just had my turbo rebuilt (it was puking oil into the exhaust) and the shop stated that there was some melted aluminum on the exhaust tubine blades. He stated that it us usually an indication that there has been some detonation or pre-ignition (make sense) and I may want to check my pistons...

That was me writing on the pistons to tell where they came from. I’m just curious if this is a common thing with JE pistons or if I just got lucky yet again. Lol

Looks like it is supposed to be there? These are for an RF 900, but similar.

That looks like a piece broke off. That sucks. Those pistons look pretty rough. For being a newish motor i thought they would look better then that

Agreed. It was 3 out of 4 that had the same damage. Only one was not damaged. Here is pics from when it was built. There was no damage and the pistons were not made like that.

I sent an email to JE to see if they are able to tell me what happened.

Honestly I would probably still run them. But hey that’s just me. What’s your plan with the bike. Part it out and put a stock motor back in it?
