Picked up a NAIL!!!! gah! :(

Riding home late last night after a tennis match (4.5 USTA singles, got destroyed) only to run over something on the highway..

i didn't give much thought to it, looked back but i couldnt see anything and although the bike jumped to one side a bit it seemed to be a nonfactor.

well, come out after work today hoping to ride the bike, only to find the tire is flat with a nail all the way in it.

how indepth is the fix? can it be done with the tire mounted on the wheel? can the wheel stay on? its my rear .. . ..

any advice / pro tips / recommendations on tire patchings ?

only holes in the contact patch can be fixed. on thesidewall forget it.
patches- tires gotta come off the rim. the inside of the tires roughed up, adhesive applied, and a plug- patch installed with the plug part sticking thru the hole.
car type plugs can be installed with a tire full of air. (personally i've run car plugs, and to over 100 mph, but i'm kinda crazy/cheap)
some folks wont run plugged/patched tires period
