So my mother applied for her widow benefits a few weeks back and was approved. The rep for SS told her she would receive around $900 a month starting in June/July 2011.
Today she got a letter from SSI saying that her application was approved and her entitlement date was March 2011. The next line says we cannot pay you because of your work.
Any future payments will be based on current benefit rate of $1,236. OK still with me good then it says we are withholding $2,472 of benefits for March and April 2011.

Lastly it says benefits described in this letter are all you can receive from SSI

Can someone explain this to me it is confusing. Thanks

Not sure if your mother is working or not, but for every $2 she makes above $14,000 per year, $1 is deducted from her benefit payout. Really a crummy deal since she has paid in all her working life, but THAT'S OUR GOVERNMENT at it's WORST.

And people want them to run our Health Care

But I thought Social Security was "socialist" so it shouldn't exist.

Incorrect, Social Security is Government Insurance (like a 401K) which you pay in all your life and then reap very little benefits from, based on what you and your employer have paid in. It's not a FREE GOVERNMENT Benefit. Our problem is, there NEVER has been a Government Social Security Account. Our Great Politicians have ALWAYS just put the money in the General Fund and SPENT IT on other things. That's just something you get in a "What Can You Do For Me" for my Vote mentality at the Federal Level.:beerchug:
