One Old Man's Quest.........for 250 Mph.

After yesterday's speed, the

timing tower - 2 miles away - had

decided they needed to watch me with binoculars.

This was ostensibly to make sure I

was not pushing with my feet,

but also because, from their viewpoint,

they were unable to tell if I was actually moving...........

I quickly fond the sweet spot in the

engine's power band and gearbox.

4,000 rpm (Red line is 10,500 rpm),

and 2nd gear of the 6-speed box.

Life stood still, and (almost) so did I.

The final timing slip ushered us into the
impoundment area, where the bike
was fully checked for legality,
and the new record was stated.

My return run, at an unprecedented 16 mph,
was good for an 18.9MPH AVERAGE, for the
SLOWEST RECORD IN HISTORY.

The tiny crowd went WILD, with one person applauding,
and the other person cheering.................

I found on u-tube 2016 busa claiming speed of 365kph. He filmed it somewhere in the U.S.A. type in 2016 busa doing 365kph. Make your own conclusion, all I saw the Speedo going to end of dial but still going faster

I followed up the next morning with a full-power
record attempt with the 175cc converted,
as before, to sidecar..

I gave the bike everything it and I had,
nursing the throttle for every 0.1 horsepower,
and using every rider's trick I knew,
and was able to grab my 6th record
of the week at ALMOST 60 mph...............

The name of the motorcycle ?

The HINDENBURG !

So" what was the point of all this,
you might reasonably ask ?

First, we went to Bonneville to SET RECORDS,
and these six were available.

Second, I needed a lesson in humility,
which was offered is GREAT quantity.

Third, only five(5) people in the 80 year
history of the SCTA at Bonneville
racing have set six(6) records in one
week with one (1) motorcycle.

I had done it in 1985, with a vintage
Yamaha, and Now............. Iwas the
first (and only) person to do it twice.....

OK.....Back on track.

You will recall from post #22, that I
was discussing a little of my history,
motorcycles and how that all fit together..........

When I moved back to Sarasota, Florida,
I was initially working nights in a small bike
shop for very small money, while practice
(intern) teaching (at NO pay !) in a high
school to complete my education degree
so I could be certified as a school teacher.

When I moved to Sarasota, I was riding a
Royal Enfield Interceptor - which I currently
own, but am now selling.

I would soon be a Harley owner, and be
supported by the Harley Factory
Racing team.

How did THAT come about ?

When younger, I used to go to hear popular bands of the day,
one of which was Lonnie Mack, who did a popular
song of the time called "Memphis."

My friend Bud ( Reese Wynan's older brother) and I met Lonnie in Bradenton Florida,
at one on Lonnie's concerts and admired Lonnie's travel "system."

Somehow, Lonnie has swung a lease on a brand-new Cadillac four-door Eldorado,
attached a trailer hitch, and towed a trailer with the band's equipment.

The band therefore traveled in air conditioned, new
Cadillac style while performing 300 shows a year.

I always wondered how the dealership felt about the car when,
after only a year, the car reappeared worn out, springs broken,
with over 100,000 miles on the clock.......

I had a sort-of kinship with Lonnie, since we had been both
raised in little rural villages,......He grew up without electricity,
and I grew up without indoor plumbing.........

Lonnie persevered with music, and later recorded
with Stevie Ray Vaughan......another Wynans
connection that will later be made clear.

Congratulations sir on a fine achievement . a very good friend of mine has made a few trips over the ,his name is Alan Thorenson , he rides a black zx14 name black thunder. I also grew up knowing the legendary Burt Munro whose record still stands on a vintage Indian.

At some point in the 1960’s, I had realized
that even with a NEW 45rpm record, I was
not hearing the “best” of the music I was learning to love.

For example: Although the beat – and sometimes
the lyrics came through from the car radio, there was
something happening in the music world that would
revolutionize popular music.

Something called High Fidelity.
