Not so new Newbie

Here is another, this time at Maxton. My wife is on the bike, and I made the pic for her. The guys at work call her Scooter Girl.

I just didn't know RSD had left. Not seeking drama at all but someone message me with some background. My first thought was he died in an accident??? Sometimes people move on or cross someone and don't like dealing with it. Just happens.

Bike38 something-or-other,

is your engine normally aspirated? 210HP at the rear wheel? How come you only went 184 with 210HP? Do you have a big-bore kit?

I didn't get the mods done until this year. The ECTA times were from last year with the stock exhaust and sprockets. The Maxton track is only 1 mile long so it's tough to get up to full speed. I ran 192 on the salt, but didn't have enough motor to hit the limiter in 6th.

I had the Carpenter 210 mod done this August, and this will be my first top speed run since the mod. My bike still has the stock bore and pistons.

You have to start somewhere, so with the mods that I have I will be able to run in the 1350PP (production class). The current record is 192MPH and I will do my best to set a new one. It won't be Noonan fast, but I'll give her hell.

Racing at Maxton is so cheap ($200), anyone on the east coast should be hitting it at least once a year. I made 13 runs in 2 days last year. You just keep going around and getting back in line.

I'll let you know how the next race goes, I leave next Friday.

Mikey D,

Regarding the salt trip; I have always wanted to take my Busa on the salt, so while I was sitting at my desk on a Monday in August 2002, I called the SCTA and found out that 'Speed Week' started that weekend. I hung up the phone and called my wife and told her to schedule vacation for the following week. That Friday, we packed up the bike and some clothes and headed to Utah (about 1900 miles away).

I had no idea there would be 'rules' or 'tech' inspections or anything else, I just got in the truck and drove. We drove straight thru for 30 hours. We arrived Sunday morning and it was damned HOT!

I was told I would have to attend rookie orientation, tech inspection and licensing. Orientation, no problem. Tech inspection did not go as well. As the inspector started looking at my bike (I still had the tank bag and license plate on it) he looked at me and said "Son, you're gonna be here a while". It ended up being 4 hours and I still didn't get finished.

The ball end of my clutch lever had been broken off when my brother dropped the bike, I had nothing safety wired, I also needed a dead man switch and duct tape for the lights, a fire extinguisher and a CB.

The inspector told me that I would have to find a new clutch lever if I wanted to get on the track, so I asked the first busa owner I saw if I could borrow one. I had no idea that I would be asking Landspeedlarry (Larry Forstall) one of the fastest bike riders on the track. Larry gave me the lever and said keep it, he was happy he could help, what a guy.

With the lever fixed I had my wife tackle the small things: remove the license plate and bracket, reflectors, rear turn signals, tape the lights etc. I love my wife.

I still needed to safety wire the front axle bolts, and hook up the dead man switch and get some metal valve stem caps (can't race with the plastic ones) but I had no equipment to do this.

I headed out to ask for help again, Larry let me have some drill bits for the safety wiring, but didn't have a drill or wire. I came across a guy who loaned me some wire but didn't have a drill. Then I happened across Bob Moreland (another fast guy) who loaned me a drill. By this time the track was closing for the day, so I loaded the bike in the truck and headed into town.

I stopped at the first and only car parts store in Wendover (the only town for hours) and as luck would have it, they had 1 set of metal valve stem caps and some kind of plastic connector for a GM truck that I was later able to make into a dead man switch.

Now I headed out to find a motel, which was not easy. Most were booked or $100 a night for dumps, but I found one. I spent the night in the back of my pickup truck drilling holes for safety wire and hooking up the DM switch. I then headed down to the local truck stop and found a fire extinguisher and a CB.

I felt victorious!!! Wrong!! I took my wife to a casino for dinner and ended up with food poisoning. Son of a Bi7(h. I was down for the count for the next couple of days.

When I finally got to the track I had to make my licensing runs. Your drivers license is good for a category E. First run you have to run between 125 and 150, and prove you can handle the bike will get you a D. Next run between 150 and 175 will get you a C. 175 to 200 will get you a B. 200+ for an A, which is my next goal.

My best run was 192.581MPH with a stock bike. I was incredibly proud. So, now I have the ‘addiction’ and I look forward to the track (Maxton or Utah) more than birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving and sex combined.

Sorry this ran on so long, my bike is my passion. I can't think of anything I would rather do than ride flat out.

Ride safe, 382 :beerchug:
