new owner sprocket question

The changes he asked about will make the bike harder to get rolling from a stop AND will put a lot of stress on the clutch. The bike only goes as fast as YOU twist the throttle...if you can't manage good throttle control...then the Hayabusa is not a bike for a inexperienced rider :rulez:

thankyou. i understand and have throttle control. just figured if i dont need the top and could gain some fuel mileage why not. it wont work is all i needed. thanks for the help

ok. How about this. I asked a question... ansewer the question.
I now know the question asked not the right thing to do.....understood. no need to be elitests and throw opinions around of what kind of bike I should ride.

'If I drop a tooth or two in the rear and go up one or two in the front will it be a little less responsive on the throttle? Or will it just make it super torquey?"

If you go up a tooth or two on the front, it is like going down 3-6 teeth on the rear...either one will KILL your slow speed throttle response...you'll end up giving it more 'gas' to make it move...

Will it make it 'super torquey" no, not at all...just harder to ride.

Who told you what kind of bike to ride ???

We are just trying to answer your question...stick around the site for a while and you will realize that we are trying to help you.

Your question was not 'asked' in a manner that we normally see here...come back to this thread in 6 months or so and re read it...you think we are "elitests"

Ok if thats what you want to do with YOUR bike do it. It can be done. If your not going to change it yourself you might want to come up with a good story for the mechanic so he won't give you sh!t when you tell him what you want done and WHY on that bike.
BTW starting off with "I'm not a meat head" isn't a good way to avoid seeming like a meat head. It would be much better for the bike if you did not go that way with the gearing. If you have the lady friend on the back you will not want the gearing that way. It will affect the way your bike handles during Uturnz, slow turns, traffic............
Just make sure that you are definitely sure that you hate the bike the way it is now before you change it. Also make sure that the gearing it has IS what you think it is. Previous owner might have dropped 1 in the front and added 2 or 3 on the back and said it was stock just to simplify the sale. Salesmen don't usually know either...

Sorry im a little snippy(long day at work, but who doesnt have those), and thanks again. thats the kind of input i was looking for.

Welcome, yes what you want to do will work, go down 3 in the rear will make it a little slower in responce and will get you a little better in gas milage. I have an orange and black 08 and that is what I did, although not for less throttle response. It will be about 8% lower RPM and about 8% better gas milage. I rode mine to Reno from Dallas, in 2 days, averaged about 55 to 60 MPG, hit 63.3 once and this was around 80 to 85 cruise. The rear is cheaper to do. :welcome: again

yeah go up 1 on front or - 2 to 3 on rear, but don't do both...the gen 2's come with 18/43 gearing gen 1s come with 17/40 its actually pretty close to each other...just change your front to an 18 and leave the rear alone you should be happy, also if its to tourqy you can change to a higher gear and it wont pull as hard at slow speeds..I:E: using 6th gear at 35-50 mph wont pull like 3rd or 4th would at the same speed...good luck and be careful, everyone hear just wants you to be safe, some of us show it in other ways but we all mean u no disrespect, babusa and others are great guys and very knowledgeable, and have been riding busa's since 2003 or earlier.... I trust anything they tell me
:poke::beerchug:

yeah dont be offended...sometimes guys on here get frustrated with the newb style posts and I dont blame them.. but Its no big deal.. Just remember, its the internet and its a free opinion based site.

If you were paying a mechanic for the advice, then you get mad when they dont answer without their opinion first.

The last bike I "owned" was a gs500e..but have ridden for years and years..and the busa is perfect for me.

Im also 27, and have been riding for 10 years on the street and like 20 on the dirt....

The whole generality they are making, is based on "the average" joe who never hones skills, just burns gas and rides for show... that guy will wreck a busa because he is ego-driven.. not heart and passion-driven like most of the guys on here.. we are driven by beauty, art and a deep desire to enjoy life...and our motorcycles.

The problem is.. we are a rarity.. the average joe is probably the biggest buyer of bikes like the busa..and its usually after they wrecked the last one...

first let me say :welcome: and second. the fact you are asking the question to give yourself some time for aclamation earns respect in my book and in no way should be looked down upon. how many of us bought the girl with a full respect for it untill it scared the **** outta us? ...then we learned how to master and improve. (see break in threads) so to answer. yes do the mods you want to make her yours. if that means dropping teeth in the back (easyest to do) just so you have a little down play in the throttle and in the accelleration. do it. after a while you will gain confidence as im confident you seem to have a master of the wrist already because you are already mastering that wich controls the wrist and that is the mind.

I went down two in the rear, because it calculated out to a top speed of somewhere north of 205 MPH at 10,200 RPMs in 6th gear. With a stock motor it just didn't work out the way I thought at the time. Anyway, that combination will do what you want. The bike will be a little sluggish compared to the stock gearing. As far as gas mileage; the Busa just doesn't work the way you think it would. The Gen I has a sweet spot around 4K RPMs that gives you your best mileage in 6th gear. A little above or a little below doesn't give you as good a gas mileage.

Welcome to the site, I promise it's not always this harsh.

no, the question was if i went up 1 front and down 2 back will it calm her down a little bit until i get used to her

 Oh!! I thought the same thing she wasn't being responsive enough for ya when you were 2 up  an:welcome: She will only do what you ask her too though just ease up on the twist motion it will be fine I went up from a 600 F3 just took a day or 2 to get used to not twisting the throttle on it like my old bike. When I left the dealer I did it on the highway took me second to figure "wtf is everyone driving so dam slow on the hwy"... "Oh! I see the speedo hit 120 in 3 rd without even making it scream my bad. After that i was doing it on purpose:smileok:

Enjoy your ride it's a special breed:thumbsup:

as I stated before I am not a meat head. I understand and respect the power of the bike and did not buy it for that reason. As I gain more experience on the bike im sure I will enjoy the power as well. I still have the 500 and not sure that it will happen but plan on still riding it as well.

maybe better to leave it on the kick stand a bit an ride your busa till you get your right hand in sync. you will get use to it quickly at first you may just need to flash down on the speedo a little more often but I am sure that soon enough you will have throttle control in check

Ok guys, I am no meat head. Bought the busa because its said to be the most comfortable long haul street bike. Im tall. My wife will be comfy...no nagging. And after all it is a busa!!!! No I have a level head and am stepping up from a gs500 after 2 years. If I drop a tooth or two in the rear and go up one or two in the front will it be a little less responsive on the throttle? Or will it just make it super torquey? its a 01 so no mode select. Just checking to see if there was a way to keep it not so accesible...in case i did have a dumb moment.

I will post pics as soon as I pic her up....this weekend

Give it a little time and you'll adjust to it. Personally when I picked up my 04 I was a little disappointed at the mega tall gearing and lack of "percieved" acceleration. Was def "softer" than I was expecting. I do also live at 5000ft up tho, which kills power bigtime. Leave the gearing alone and give yourself time to adjust....you'll be fine :beerchug:

You could go down 2 or 3 in back, I think you just need to learn throttle control.
