I think it is to clear the fender..I believe that having the width & height adjustable will let me lift other bikes as well. Nice solid stand. I saw allot of complaints about the original stand interfering with the stock rear fender on Gen 2 bikes. I never had a quality stand before, so I like it. I used it in grass, gravel & on concrete. Solid.
