Net Neutrality

Any thoughts? Less government regulations so eliminating net neutrality will probably be good in my opinion.

Excellent question Ken!

I don't think that most people realize that freedom evolves with changes in technology and population. Today, the most critical threats to our freedom are access to affordable healthcare and access to information. I'm sure many here will not agree but the role of our government is to ensure the free and open playing field for it's citizens. Obviously that means protecting our boarders from foreign invaders, but it also means protecting that basic "utilities" necessary for the maintenance of the common good. If we do not protect access to critical technologies, technologies largely created with tax payer's dollars, large conglomerates will control our freedom by limiting access to these critical "utilities". For example, large businesses can control competition from small businesses by limiting their access to internet band width. There is also the propaganda aspect of this. If one side of the political argument can control all access to information, basically they can create a "state controlled media" right here in the good old US of A.

I could go on forever on this but.........

Normally I am against all government regulations, however the way I understand this makes me think net neutrality regulation is something good. It seems like eliminating this would put the control of information in the hands of even fewer people.

Here is an example.. Let's say that the goverment got out of the business and allowed ISP's to be in control. ISP's could decide that forums were a waste of time and they could limit bandwidth for port 80 or for certain types of traffic on that port making places like this site at the discretion of the ISP's Does that sound like something you really want?

We often times use water and pipes as an analogy for the Internet. Imagine you pay the same water bill next month but the water department decides when and how much water you can use at any given time. You can only use 5 gallons for watering plants and 500 gallons a month for flushing toilets and 300 gallons for laundry and oh by the way you can only use the water for drinking during the hours of 3am - 5am, sounds ridiculous doesn't it? What you really want is water at the tap, at your convenience to be used how you want and when you want. The internet is the same, imagine the ISP's deciding that FB is more important than Google Plus or that Streaming content is using too much bandwidth so they charge more for that as a "Premium" service. If you don't subscibe and pay more you get the constant buffering. Imagine ISP's charging by the search, the more you search the more you pay...

When it comes to making money folks these companies will find a way to charge you for it.

So listening to the arguments above net nutrality was passed under the Obama admin, did google and facebook stop controlling what people see on the internet? Didn’t think so. Speaking of state controlled media, fake news and media corruption is at an all time high (most of us already knew it and Wikileaks proved it), so that didn’t help either since fake news is now so prevelant on one side of the fence even liberals are admitting it’s a problem. More governmental control is almost never the answer and almost always designed to do the opposite of what they say or even intend. And by the way, not that I’m any fan of them, but those large conglomerates are the ones that build the technology and infrastructure for that to exist in the first place, not the government.

Really feel like a total dumbass when it comes to all the cyber stuff you have to have a handle of nowadays . The Australian government , doesn't matter which one / side is in power , have methodically chipped away at any privacy ( if there ever was any ) in the name of protecting the people from terrorism etc . The Australian population let them do anything because of this fear . Fear is the bastards in power ticket to ride with no questions asked . They now collect metadata , (i don't even know what this is ) , and those con artists couldn't even explain what this entailed or even what metadata means ... we still let it through !! I got no problem if it shuts down child porn rings or some religious zealot organization , but I think they want easy ways of tracking journo's sources for prosecution and such . Not all news is fake , check not for profit media before believing any of Murdoch's billion dollar interests and obvious bullshit !
Anyway , glad the worlds got people like you Captain batting for us computer illiterate lot . Sorry for sidetrack , but had to spill my thoughts a little lads !

In all fairness though, Al Gore did invent the internet so I guess it was technically created by the government...

LMAO at Murdoch’s the devil with out so much as a mention of CNN at the very least...

Go go back and look at the history of telecom.... Ma Bell was broken up for a reason!

If you want to get a little closer to home just look at your phones today, do you really think that it cost the price you pay for mobile data to keep things operational and advance things heck no! Phone companies make money by selling packages and getting you to buy the next package just right at your fingertips. They bundle those plans to get you to pay more for bandwidth pure and simple. With smart phones us suckers fell right in line so now you have to have a line charge and a Data plan so we are essentially double paying into the system. It's those same phone companies that are also your ISP's ya know.. Do you think that they are going to all the sudden be real ethical with how much they charge you for? You would see packages created based on usage and bandwidth reports, charge for what the people want.

what regulation we are talking about the government providing here in my opinion is the check and balance of open internet access not the gov coming in and acting like the EPA, this is actually the complete opposite.

Ya the government will never come in and act like the EPA, oops, they are the EPA and everything they touch turns to rot for the people who fund it (us). You want the government regulating the internet this is how the camels nose gets under the tent, they were salivating over it.
Here's a great article on net neutrality. But on a side note unrelated to the link, if liberals and the government want it there is no better reason to instinctively be against it. The amount of trust folks put into politicians is unreal, at least with a corporation you get to vote with your dollar, with the politician they get to vote with your dollar and in their own personal interest...wake up folks.
