Need ideas....installing radar on the BUSA....

o.k....

I've done my research....I realize the Valentine V1, Escort 8500 x50, and Beltronics...are king of radar pickup.... But...I wanted something a little more hidden and not screaming..."hey, look at me...I have a huge detector behind my windscreen....)

I've ordered the Whistler Cruisader. (I've sacraficed pickup range for the ability to somewhat 'hide' the unit)

The Cruisader is designed to go into a 2 1/16" gauge pod enclosure....used by the car gauge industry.

I'm slowly running out of room......any Ideas? Was thinking about pulling out my instrument panel....pulling the coolant temp gauge....and putting the detector in its place. Does anyone know if the coolant guage is a 2 1/16 gauge? and is it a PITA to get to and swap out?

I could also buy a universal single gauge pod mount and mount it somewhere, but I'm running out of room....

Any Ideas? or anyone that has done something similar?

Below is a pick of the detector, and my current BUSA dash setup. (note....the air-shifter PSI gague already mounted in the steering stem hole)

Here is one mounting option I was considering....but not sure where to put it.

Takin out the temp guage? Not a good idea man. What happens when one day something goes wrong and it starts overheating and you don't know it and instead of a head gasket job you now have a new engine to buy cause the block and heads are warpped? If it were me I'd think of something else. What about putting it in one of the inner fairing pannels? Oh and by the way, If I'm not mistaken, the cluster is not able to be dissasembled in the way you're talking about. It's not just some guages mounted in holes, it's a complete unit with everything integrated. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Was thinking inner panels myself. Rightside perhaps next to the gauges?

I had the same detctor. I had the Tiger racing dual gauge holder that bolts to the triple tree. I mounted the radar receiver under my front nose. It is difficult to reach the bolts to tighten up. If you mount it there, watch the top of your fender. Mine was stock height, and it bottomed out one time when I hit a big bump. Goodluck.

That's a nice radar dectector....personally, I'm no good at being creative either when it comes to devices like these. Sorry man....and good luck.

Thanks for the info on the instrument cluster.....

All my other sportbikes have been an enclosed gauge cluster --- so, I mess with that.

I did a search for the Tiger cluster that bolts to the tripple tree.....wasn't able to find it.

Can you find a link for me?

I have used the Escort 8500 X50 attached to a H.A.R.D. (Helmet Assisted Radar Detection) device for years. I have the Escort attached to the left side of the nose cowling with industrial strength velcro. The H.A.R.D. sending unit is velcroed to the left inner panel. When the radar picks up a signal it alerts me with a flashing red light in my helmet. Works like a dream and it's wireless. I have never received a radar ticket while riding with this set up.

Sacrificing 'pickup range' is exactly what's going to cause you to get a ticket. I like knowing miles ahead sometimes, that a cop is waiting. Never thought my 4X4 inch V1 on a techmount stem stand was a 'huge' detector...good luck with yours. Mine has saved me many many times.

I hear ya..... who knows....if this unit sucks.... saving up for a V1 and a H.A.R.D. is at the top of my list...

Good to know....the V1 is only 4x4?

Trust me....if this Cruisader sucks.....she won't last a month!

I just have this thing about the possiblity of being pulled over and the cop seeing the detector on my bike..... instant ticket no matter what. But, I guess if you never get pulled over.....then who cares....

I like the idea of the detector blending into the rest of the bike.... to bad they didn't make a V1 or 8500 the same way. Though, I like the idea of the detector being hidden in the front fairing with the H.A.R.D....but, then your talking upwards of a $600.00 install...

I have extensive knowledge in this area where it comes to radar detectors and laser jammers. Don't buy that piece of junk (Whistler) that you are planning to buy there. All you are doing is throwing your money out the window. Now days if you want "REAL" protection you have to have 2 levels of protection. 1)Laser Jammer is a must. I currently have the Blinder M25 Laser Jammer and I have a head mouted under the front of the nose of my bike with Contruction Strength Velcro and it works great. 2)You also need a great radar dector (currently have the Passport 8500 X50), the 2 you had mentioned are great (not the whistler), I have my radar dector mounted on a mount that fits in the center hole. I have a adaptor that plugs in the speaker jack of it that sends the audio through bluetooth to my wireless bluetooth headset (MOTOROKRâ„¢ S9 Bluetooth® Stereo) behind the neck and it works fine with helmet on. I can hear the jammer or radar detector at any speed that I am cruising and even at extreme high speeds. The key thing is you want the best performance and detection, looks have nothing to do it. Since I have had this configuration I have had 0 tickets. If you are going to do it, do it right. Don't waste your money on that junk whistler radar detector.

wow ----

Your talking about taking the $1,000 plunge.... 8500/9500 + M25 + H.A.R.D.

I agree with you... that is a sweet system.

If anything though... you have really just given me some info...

I know now to do my best to make the Whistler install temporary.

Hey --- if you have another system....put of the pics of your install.

Nope, I don't have a HARD System.....did not want that(rather hear it in ears vs seeing it). I already had the Passport X50 already, so I just purchased the X25 Blinder $425.00.....I also already had the bluetooth headset since I had listen to mp3 on bike. I purchased the dual center stand for the bike. Still planning to add a gps unit. Purchased a device adaptor for the conversion from speaker to bluetooth $19.99.....that is about it... did the install of this myself....not hard at all.
