Need help with Win Media Player

I need some help figuring out what happened to my WMP-9.

I cannot get .wmv files to play unless I download them to the hard-drive. I used to be able to play them by copying the link and pasting it into WMP, but now it just sits there until it times out and gives an error message. This has been going on for a few months now.

Computer info: (All hardware was here before the problem)
IBM Clone Type w/ AMD Athlon 800MHz
524MB Ram
MS Windows 2000 Professional
Netscape 7.1
Broadband Cable Modem (Road Runner)
Router
Firewall Program
Windows Media Player 9

I've tried looking at every preference list and properties box I can think of, but I can't find anything that sticks out as a problem. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

dood, you're lucky. I had to uninstall and go back to 6 cuz I couldnt get it to play at all.... junk!
