Need help with Computer

(semi @ Dec. 10 2006,12:05) i have a copy of Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 i can loan to you if you want to download it on your computer and see if it will read your DVD then
I have 7.5 and still have no luck.

(GSXTacy @ Dec. 10 2006,12:03) You might want to go to the roxio site and update any drivers. I had to do that with my sony DVD burner.
+1

This might be stupid but you might try bringing the discs to a Ritz store - they might be able to open them with their equiptment and make prints on the spot.

see if it works on mine.
How?
I can't acces the DVD's enough to save.
go into your email and compose a new email and attach the file. Click "browse" and then "my computer" then your cd drive. Then click the file and send the email. If that doesn't work, I dunno.

Tried with no luck, just froze up.

How much memory is in the new PC?

Usually, when I get that type of responce from a cd/dvd drive, it's either

1) The drive can't read it - hardware issue = Update/Flash Bios in cd rom drive.

2) PC doesn't have enough memory - Roxio is a memory intensive application and may choke a PC without enough Memory.

3)Bad write - There are programs out there to read/restore a bad disk if it is salvageable. If Roxio saved everything in it's own format, it may be more difficult.

I don't always print my pics, but I do check all backups immediately after making them to make sure they took. Too many bad burns make coasters of backup cd's.

In the future, it's bet to copy directly to a cd like you would a hard drive. That way you can access the files individually instead of having to use a particular software. IE, Norton Ghost will back up your files, but you'll have to have Ghost installed to see what files are in the compressed image.

I would try ...
make another cd using that backup program to see what kind of format it uses. I doubt that Walmart or any other place will have software that will read a file created for and from Roxio. There may be recovery appz that will read that format.

Make sure you've flashed the bios in the DVD drive to the latest firmware version - much better chance the media will be read correctly. Even new hardware doesn't have the latest updates.
Make sure you have at least 512 MB of memory. In a new PC it should but I have a pc with 512 that craps out often while burning/reading media for that reason.

If it is a bad disk/burn... you looking for "Bad Copy Pro"
find it here...

Good luck!

...., trip

Anyone close to your residential area w/ a computer that you can test the DVD with?

To retrieve the files you shouldn't need to have roxio installed on the destination PC so any PC other than yours should do.

I'd hate to think the DVD has bad sectors so if you have a blank DVD try to burn a copy of the original.

I don't recall (from the posts above) if you copied the contents of the disc to the PC first. If not, try that and then attempt to retrieve the files opposed to retrieving directly from the disc.

Will try to flash drive.
Has 512 MB memory. went to install the 1 GB out of the old and seen it's a different kind.
All files are saved as there original kind, .jpg, mpg etc.
Tried Bad copy pro along with isobusters and cdrollers with no luck. Can view list of files, but as soon as you start trying to retrieve or test to see if it can be recovered the program freezes.

Going to check for drive firmware.
Thanks.

Tried to do coping, but no luck.
Going to dad's after lunch to try on his computer.

Starting to fear it's bad sectors on the dvd.

I haven't given up yet, but do you all think the geek squad that works with computers could get this even if the dvd has bad sectors?
Just hate to see how much they would charge, but hopefully if they didn't fix it, they wouldn't charge anything.
Leaving to go to dad's, I'll keep you all updated.

No Way... those guy's are dangerous!

If they did try, they'd charge you a fortune to tell you it's bad.

You'd be better off with Geeks on Call 1 800-905-GEEK, but even then I doubt they'll try anything you can't.

Here's another thought. It's a post regarding saving a bad movie burn, but same difference
smile.gif

Use DVDDecryptor to make an ISO of the bad disc. Decryptor will report any reading errors, (which translate to data errors). How these errors affect viewing the movie will not be predictable, but should be just brief breakup of the picture.

Next use Decryptor to burn the same ISO and you will have a perfectly good movie (minus any bad sectors in the original) The latest version of Decryptor is designed to read through bad sectors, so it should work alright. Trying different reading drives will give you different results. Some drives might read it with no errors, others might fail in reading it.

UPDATE:

Just wanted to let everyone know that I got most of the stuff back.
I got all the family pics, baby pics, and bike pics back.
Only thing I lost are a few programs that can be downloaded again and 58 out of 138 bike videos.

Dad kept the discs and will be trying to recover the other videos, but if it doesn't work, then I'll live.
But main thing is that I got all the pics back.

I've used them with great (and costly) success.

Took them a hard drive that all of my tools and knowledge wouldn't repair. They didn't charge me until they were sure they could retrieve the data.

So if you take it to them, make sure they can read it before you leave it with them.

Damage for me was $99 and some change.
