Just bought an 8500 x50. I need help with the wiring. There are 4 wires (red, black, yellow, green) in a telephone type connector. The 2 extra wire is for the mute button on the cigarrete plug, I assume. Problem is I dont know which wire is which. What type of fuse do I need to run? Does any1 own this model radar who can help me so that I dont fry it? I am completely lost when it comes to installing something electrical. Thanks.

I don't have the system, but I believe the phone jack (RJ-11 or RJ-14) is something you probably don't want to mess with. It attaches to other devices like the H.A.R.D., or buzzers, etc.

Have you checked Passport's website for instructions?

Good luck.

you can buy the direct connect cable from Passport for about $35. It comes with instructions on how to wire it into your vehicle and it includes the fuse. If you are going to go on the cheap and use the cigarette plug, then you need to use a voltmeter to see which pin or wire has the +12 and ground.

I think you need to spend the $35 if you don't know electrical circuits, and/or get someone more knowledgable to do it for you. Otherwise you will end up with a $299 paperweight.

Well, today i ordered the direct cable from escort. Instead of the 4 wire direct cable with the mute button, i just order the cable with just 2 wires for 10$ plus shipping. Now when they say this radar detector runs on 12v with negative ground, do they mean u have to connect the ground wire directly to the negative post on the battery or u can hook it up to any existing ground wire? Again help a newb out.

The $10 Direct cable works fine for hard-wiring to the battery. I just did it with my new detector because it was easier than getting to the "accessory" connectors behind body panels. The Direct cable has it's own in-line fuse but, as you may know, it will always be "On" since it goes through no switched circuits like the ignition switch. Just remember to turn off the detector when not riding.

It's easy to wire--remove the seat, raise the tank and ...voila!
