Just before I let my then 16 year old son get his driver's licence, I took him to our local emerg and let him watch the ambulance attendents cart in the meat on Saturday night for a few hours. I also showed him photos of fatal motor accidents from police files.
I will do the same when my daughters reach driving age.
This is the only way I know of to defeat the natural human tendency to rationalize away the threatening notion of injury to self.
I have a forsensics photo book that I got at law school entitled "Fatal Injuries." I refer to this every once in a while to keep my own cockiness in check.
If you don't stay in touch with reality in one way or another, the "It Can't Happen To Me" syndrome will get you.
Denial does not make you a safer rider.
