Well i picked up copies of the MRI today that i had done back on 9-11-06. I was looking at them after i got home from work, and the herniated disc that i have between L5 / S1 looks to be protruding out pretty far. I am no doctor, but imo, it looks to be pretty bad. I have 2 appointments next week with 2 different doctors as to get 2 opinions about my condition. I know several people on here have said before that they have herniated disks too, and ride for therapy and such, but i just dont like the looks of what i am seeing in the MRI's. The way that my family doctor told my wife was ".... has your husband seen a back specialist yet?" and when she said that i havent, he said "..... he needs to, he has a fairly bad herniated disk".

My first appointment is sept 26th, and the other is sept 27th. i am hoping that this can be resolved without surgery, but i guess i will have to wait to see what the docs say.

I know that i have had quite a few days with some severe pain in my back, groin area, and down my legs.

keep me in your thoughts next week on tuesday and wednsday. I will post updates after i find out what the docs want to do.

Dude do not have surgery. Do go to a good chiropractor. Do lose weight. Do not sit or stand too long. Do get rest horizontally. Do take hot baths and hot showers. Do a lot of stretching exercises while standing upright slowly reach and repeat until you can touch your toes. Once you have done this you will be able to operate pain free. I know because three years ago I was in exactly your shoes. Leg pain radiating down the back of my left leg. Buttocks/gluteus area aching, left and right testicles aching. Right leg numb areas. Diminished sensation and absent achilles and knee reflex.
Now I am golden.
I started with a broomstick stretching holding back to upright straight legs all the way.. I could bring the stick down to my knees on the first rep, by the 50th rep I was well past my toes to the moint that I was on planks two or three inches high and touching the ground with the stick in my clenched fists. Try it, take it from me. It really works, you just need to strengthen your Erector Spinae and lumbar muscles around your waist. Drop weight, loose inches around the midsection. If you need to go to work, kneel at your desk while typing, the balancing action will tax your muscles and make them work thus growing to the size they should be to contain the herniation.
Follow my advice and you might be pain free and off Naproxen/Napirsen (Alleve) in a couple of days. Trust me I did it, I suffered through nearly a year of severe symptoms and came out of it within a matter of days of starting a strengthening routine.
I do squats now with over 300 lbs on my shoulders and manage to get ten reps a set on the smith machine/safety rack.... My back feels it but is nothing like it was when I was a lardy herniated phug.

Sorry to hear.  If you are over weight (like me) loose some weight.  Dont do the Chiroprator thing for a hern disk  they can make it worse.  If the surgery is too scary maby look at getting a shot.  My mom had surgery (many many years ago) before and later got a  shot to stop the pain...it has been over a year now.

My brother had back surgery when he was 26 he has been good since then.  The pains I have been putting up with for 15 years means I will probably be in the same boat.

Best advice is to listen to a good doctor and do what you feel is the best for you.

Hope everything works out.

Hope all goes well

Hope all goes well with your doc appointments... there are alternatives to surgery. Look into it and you will find there are clinics everywhere that deal with different types of back pain and they arent all chiropractors.

This is the internet. Your situation is NOT exactly the same as everyone else's here or at least, we can't tell if it is or not. While it's good to lose weight if you need to and strengthen your back muscles, at least go to the doctor as scheduled and see what he says. If he jumps right to surgery first, THAT's when I'd get a second opinion and work on some of the suggestions mentioned above.

Also, be careful with chiropracters, as mentioned. They can do some wonderful things but if you get the wrong one, your herniated disk could be your next surgery, like it or not.

Best of luck to you.

Do some reserch on Spinal decompression. It is a fairly new procedure that eliminates surgury & is a fairly quick results kinda treatment. I'm no expert on it but it might be the alternative you may be looking for. Hope you feel better.

Son in law works for EMS. Says they get a lot a of calls/pick-ups for people that went to a chiropractor for back pain - they made it worse. BUT there are good chiroprators. Just be cautious on the action that you take. I know one guy that did surgery and still walks with a limp. Another that it took three time to get it right. Another that one time and he seems fine and rides a bike (he was afraid he would have to give it up). Get good advice and get a second opinion. Exercise and loose weight (I could use that advice - wife gives me the same all the time) but do it with the doctor's blessing. You don't want to make it worse. Sometimes you just have to go through things to get to the other side. Good luck and hope it all works out!

Good thread. I've dealt with a badly herniated disk, albeit in my neck (C5/C6) fot two years now. KoK-LoL's mention of decompression is pertinent, as combined with alternating ice/heat therapy and stretching has worked wonders for me. Wag is absolutely correct in saying all situations differ, so I would read up all you can about the condition, perhaps you can speak with people that have had surgery as I was lucky enough to. I still deal with occasional pain, but it's only discomfort compared to how it felt 2 years ago. I wish you the best in whatever decision you make.

Back problems can be one of the  most difficult medical problems to deal with. I have delt with it for years and I have avoided surgery with some of the treatments discussed on this thread. I do recommend keeping your doctor appointments and see what they recommend. A second or even third opinion may be in your best interest. I stopped riding for about ten years, but took it up again five years ago and although I still have discomfort, the pleasure I get from riding is worth it. I wish you well, and hope you have a full recovery.

I have 2 herniated discs in my back, 2 in my neck and 1 bulging in my back. Spondilo Arthritis, degenerative disc disease and that is just some of what I have. Yes I have pain in my testis also, pain down my left leg. SOme numbness. I have had both knees operated on, both wrists, one shoulder, index finger, and other operations. So I haer ya on the pain and problems. Get some good doctors. Go to at least 2 doctors before ANY surgery if and when you get to that point. But the advice given above is great! Best of luck my friend!!
