Metzler Tires

Well its that time again. finally BOTH my front & rear tires
need replacing at the same time. So I'm doing my research
trying to decide what to try on my Busa this time. I go to
http://www.metzelermoto.com/product_info/fitment_chart.asp
They do NOT mention the Busa in any form or fashion. No
Hayabusa, no GSX1300R nothing, nada, zip. :cussing:

Now I know the Pirelli Diablos are the same except for tread
pattern but my local dealer doesn't stock them. Which means
A: I have to order them and thus wait who knows how long.
(this prolly doesn't matter to you low milage pikers but
I actually bought my Busa to ride.)
B: I have no idea how much they are going to cost.

Does anyone here have any milage feedback to report on the
Michelin Pilot Sport. Anything on how well they work in the
rain? Thanks.

I found this thread in the new owner FAQ area. Not sure if it will help. I think there's a better thread on here, but I can't remember where it is.

Good luck,
Jim

Metzler does make a special tire for the Hayabusa the problem you might be encountering is the fact that they had a recall on them.I do have the specifics but they are currently misplaced I will post up when I find them.If you do have this tire they will replace it free.

Here's the info thank wwjd,
http://www.safetyalerts.com/recall/a/02/v00842.htm

Metzeler Has Recalled Motorcycle Tires
(SafetyAlerts) - The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced.

Make : METZELER Model : SPORTEC M-1 P Build Dates : JAN 26, 2003 - FEB 08, 2003

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 03T003000

Component: TIRES:TREAD/BELT

Potential Number Of Units Affected : 53

Summary:
METZELER SPORTEC 120/17 ZR17 M-1 P MOTORCYCLE TIRE. DURING PRODUCTION, AN EXCESSIVE BELT TENSION WAS USED CAUSING HIGH COMPRESSION BETWEEN THE BELT AND CARCASS.

Consequence:
AS A RESULT, THE TIRE MAY CHANGE SHAPE AND A BUBBLE MAY APPEAR IN THE TREAD AREA CAUSING THE FRONT TIRE OF THE MOTORCYCLE TO VIBRATE. SUDDEN VIBRATION OF THE FRONT END COULD CAUSE THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL, POSSIBLE RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

Remedy:
METZELER WILL NOTIFY ITS CUSTOMERS AND REPLACE THE TIRES FREE OF CHARGE. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR MOTORCYCLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT METZELER AT 706-368-5426.

Important Note Regarding Auto Recalls
Frequently SafetyAlerts will list auto recalls before
your dealer will know about them. If you have a vehicle
affected by one of these posted recalls be sure and
write down the NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number.
If your dealer doesn't know about the recall when you
check, ask them how they are notified of recalls and
when the next update is due.

I bought Metzler Sportec m-1's for my Busa-Love them!!....But anyways-A guy from Metzler tire called me at home and told me of the recall.Luckily my tires were made after the problem but i thought it was very cool for them to call me.They got my number from Discount motorcycle tire where i bought them from..He also told me that the sportec m-1"P-spec" was designed for the Busa and zx-12.
Hope this helps....I'm impressed with the customer service.
There number is 1-800-PIRELLI

Call kneedraggers and ask for M1's for a Hayabusa. You'll see 'em in a couple of days -- not THAT hard to find. I love them, just like I used to like the Z4's on my BMW. Lotsa grip, decent longevity.

I actually think the Sportec is an excellent tire.
I just find it odd that Metzler has over 1000 bikes on
their site, some newer than the Busa, yet makes no mention
of it. I knew about the recall, but they are still selling the tire in Busa sizes. Its as if they are trying to avoid
liability if you crash or something. They USED to mention
the Busa. Now they don't. Wierd.

I love my sporttec m1's they're great for the way I ride just wish I could get alittle more milage out of them.

I have 32 race launches on my Michelin Pilot rear and just over 2000 miles of street riding. I've never done any burn outs and from the looks of it, I may get another 2000 miles or so. All told, it has spent approximately 45-50 miles total at speeds above 180-190MPH.

There was an issue at the track this year that is worth noting. One racers stock rubber valve stem bent over under high speed force and leaked all of the air out and the tire then let go (chunks came off), luckily no-one was hurt.

If you are going to change your tires, you may want to consider having metal valve stems put in. Going through tech at the track the inspector noticed my original rubber valve stem has bent over about 30 degrees from perpedicular to the rim. They are not high speed friendly and will not longer be alowed in Land Speed Racing next year.

Not sure if you are into this kind of riding/racing, but thought I would just pass it along as a safety issue I came across.

Is your tire the Pilot Sport HPX?

Front tire is an HPX and the rear is just the Pilot Sport (didn't have an HPX in stock when I needed a new tire). I will put the HPX on the rear the next time around.

Hope this helps, enjoy life on the tuna boat. :tounge:
