Lateral Bike Mount on a Trailer

Have any of you tried mounting a bike laterally on a trailer? How did you go about securing the bike? Am going to rebuild my old crusty 6 by 12 utility trailer. The area over the axle is less due to the two wheel fenders sticking out, and therefore can only fit one bike on it now. Would like to get more!

I suppose this question would also apply to those who used hitch carriers to haul their bikes as well.
