Kevtec, R-1 vs Busa?

The R 1 is a little small framed for me at 6ft 2in 230lbs,but I will tell you this,it will snap your *** up in the air quicker than the Busa.It is so light that when I took it off the side stand,I almost flipped it over the other way.Sometimes I take it for a spin just to try something different, the bike is rather comfortable for its size.As far as preference on long rides, I only have 800 miles on the Busa, cause I ride a different bike each day, the longest I have taken her on a 160 mile round trip, I must say that I prefer my Ultra for long rides. In closing I KNOW the R1 will out handle the Busa in cornering, and tricks, but flat out straight away, well XTREME R1 CAN TELL YOU ABOUT THAT ..LOL.Actually xtreme r1 has probably put most of the miles on the Busa, prob 3000 on his R1 this summer, 4000 on his 1100,approx 600 on my Busa, he would be the one to tell you which one is the best, I like to wrench them, make parts for them, tune them.If you have any other ques. please ask away. Hope this helped you..

I'm also 6'2", only 180 lbs. though. You fit a lot better on the busa? Is it close, or is there a noticeable difference? I like the R-1, but I always felt like I was looking down at the front tire. I almost got to ride Duc's busa, but the chain dropped in my one-hour window of opportunity. I guess what I'm getting at, is the tour part of the sport-tour description.

Not fair to compare (busa) to your ultra, unless you want to race'em too…I like the shot of all the bikes out in the driveway. The V-10, How's it pull? Good as the powerstroke?

Actually I like the V-10 better than the POWERSTROKE.I've had 8 duallys since 85,and the dealers always tols me especially on the powerstroke, that you have to put 67,000 miles on the powerstroke to justify the cost over the v10.Well that was an easy decision, since i usually get rid of them about every 2 yrs.As far as power, she will pull just about anything you put behind her..

Hey maui, well to be honest with ya... I love riding my dads busa... its really comfortable. On the other hand sandusky is only like 15 miles from the east to west side so I mean riding my R-1 around town is fine. But I'd NEVER give up my R-1 for a busa or any other bike... that bike was made for me I'm only 5'10, 170lbs.. It just fits me perfectly, but yeah your right about feeling like your riding on top of it.. I think its because of the small windscreen and the way the front fairing is designed. But as far as pure horsepower.. I do believe that the R-1 (for me) is the baddest considering the weight to horsepower ratio... I'll never doubt a busa because I know exactly what they can do... ffffaaaaassssttttt... I could tell ya how fast I took good ol dads bike but I myself probably wouldn't have one if I told ya... =) But personally I'm more of a trickster I love to ride power wheelies, and punch it on the straight aways. Me and dad punched them a few times side by side.. he always ends up winning =( But shifting 2-4th the front tire comes up maybe an inch everytime I powershift.. the busa don't because of the weight.. so if I can overcome that little bit of fear I might have a chance !!!

R-1

I have read in a few mags
where the 6'+ tester remarks
that he feels like he's riding
over the front wheel on the R1.
The Y2K R1 riding position is supposidly
slt. different,but prob. not much.
In my opinion the R1 is one of
the most beautiful bikes around.

Oh I like the R-1 plenty, and don't mind too much seeing the front rubber while riding. My questions were motivated by the Mach2 video. But I'm satisfied with what Kevtec and X-1 said. I'm not a trickster.

Konrad, you want a house on the beach here? (Saw in an earlier thread) You're looking at BIG dollars in most cases. There are still some secret spots, they're just off the beaten path. Depends if you want to live in Wailea, or Kaupo, there is a lot in between. Let me know if I can help. I know this rock pretty good.

Maybe we should start a real-estate thread?

I've been on an R-1 for a short twisties run. Ditto everyone else's observations on flickability, but one thought for you to consider Maui.

Your concern is about the nature of the island's roads, their useability for the high speed heavyweight Busa, right? So you're considering compromising to the R-1.

You don't seem to me to be the kind of person who compromises on performance.

The way the bike market is today, the R-1 is a compromise machine. Not as fast or quick as a Busa, XX or 12. Not as nimble as any good 6 or 7 bike...especially the R-6.

A squid I ride with (like you he's 6'2") uses a CBX600 (X or R, whichever the sport one is) when we go for a long ride on severe twisties with uncertain pavement (ripples, cracks, pot holes, sand, debris etc.) No one can keep up with him in these conditions, although one poser on an R-1 crashed trying even though he was warned.

I have ridden my buddy's 600 under those conditions and it's really confidence inspiring. In comparison, the Busa handles like a Chris Craft in quicksand. The 600's chassis doesn't take the rough stuff as hard and the tires stay on the ground better. And you can use full power all the time.

If those are the road conditions on Maui, why don't you try to borrow/test ride a good 600 and see how you like it?

Over the last few months, I've ridden a cbr600, Which I felt sorry for, it was up two on the back w/pipe. Just no way I can enjoy a bike like that (gutless), a ZX-7, almost a brand new bike, it was ok, still not enough power, A GTS 1000 Yamaha that was stripped down (not quite the Rodan version), flat slides, cams, pistons, nos. That bike had some power, but was a total pig (too heavy to move well) could barely keep up with the R-1. Then I rode the R-1

No, I was a little unsure after watching Mach2, but I can't ride like those guys any way. Never could, never will. And that's fine with me. Musta been the flu bug making delirious. The wife finally took the tape away and put in a porno so I could relax.

Kevtec,

Having both the R-1, and Hayabusa, How do find the comparison between the two? I know X-1 now has the R-1. But, with the two parked side by side, which would you ride and why? If you were going for a long ride, is the busa that much more comfortable? When you do cruse with X-1, what do roll-ons look like? Even? Are there times when you like one more than the other? What are the pros and cons between the two? I've seen the mach 2 video, but would like to ask some one from the real, no I don't put a knee down in every turn, world. If you had to choose between the two, which would you choose, and why? I addressed the thread to you because I know you'll give your honest opinion with out the pressure of saying the popular answer.

I'd also like to hear from any one else who has experience with the two (R-1 vs Busa). X-1? Pops give much time on the busa?

I also have the R1 (new in jan 99) & Busa (new in July 99) and have 5500miles on the R1 so far and 6200 miles on the Busa. I have taken both bikes to Sebring and had fun on both but the Busa is too heavy and has poor ground clearance for the track ( i dragged the alternator cover). I find that i use the Busa much more on the street, it is very comfortable for my 5' 8'', 170 lb frame, more relaxing to ride, tons of power so tons of fun without getting out of control. The busa accelerates better above 200 mph than the r1 above 160 mph, (indicated speeds) The R1 is much more of a track bike, when i ride it on the street i feel like i have to drag my knee thru all corners or i'm not riding it properly, its also very wheelie oriented and it MUST have a steering damper to control its front wheel which is always nervous. With riders of the same skill/ ability the R1 will KILL the busa on handling anywhere but the busa will KILL the R1 on acceleration, top speed but NOT on rollons (due to its gearing i suspect) I have made many top gear rollons againsed R1's and i always loose on the Busa. So in my humble opinion, the R1 is more a track bike and the Busa is more a street bike, but each bike can do both. FYI On very fast race tracks like Daytona, i think the Busa may win due to its power advantage.

Here's somethin crazy but the R1 has more legroom. Wanna prove it? Sit on each bike with your foot in its natural position on the peg. Now look at the angle of your thigh against the tank. On the r1 its on a downward angle. On the busa its almost parallel to the ground. Amazing but true. Any of you dual owners ever notice this? Secondly, a piped and jetted r1 will stay glued to any busa up to 160 or so, stock busa I mean. In the real world of imperfect pavement these two are down to rider ability in acceleration. After 160 or so the busa pulls away from everything.

Maui,

I know you didn’t address this thread to me but hears my two cents anyway. I had an R1 last year. I wish I still had it but its in motorcycle heaven now. I liked it a whole lot. Everything written about it on this thread is true. It is much lighter, quicker steering and the roll-ons are dead even with the Busa. However it is a twitchy bike. I’m not putting it down but for an everyday ride it just seemed too radical in its overall feel to me. I always felt as though I was up on top of a pogo stick that was rocket powered. The seating position puts your butt very high in the air and there is a precipitous reach to the bars. This along with the 55’’ wheel base and steep fork rake make for a great track bike. In the real world I felt it was just too much. On the street the R1 dos hold a handling advantage over the busa, but not so great that a good rider on the Busa can’t keep up with an equal rider on the R1. If your looking for an all around day in and day out sport bike I would recommend the Busa. The Busa is much more stable on the road. It has more low end grunt and it ia a little more comfortable. If your looking for the most radical street bike out there get the R1 or maybe the 929. You can’t go wrong with either of them.

Hey Xtreme-R1, I was just wondering, have you ever driven the R6 before? and what's your opinion on that bike. I've read that many guys have traded the R1 in for the R6 because it goes just as good if not better. I know the R1 has more power and is wheelie monster king but would you find that the R6 is similar in any ways? Besides it's cheaper and you get the same fun outta it. Any big differences that you can tell me?

Thanks for the reply. A friend of mine called me today to say, "there's a blue one in town". It's the first one here that I've heard of. No one has picked it up yet so I'm going to take a look tomorrow. If only it was red…

Any way, I'll be riding a R-1 down to take a look, just to put me in the mind set.

Hey Xtreme, a couple of my friends have R-6's and yeah their nice but as far as HP no comparison... I like the fact that the R-6 can max out at I believe 14RPM's... My R-1 I think is alot comfortable that the R-6 but yeah they pretty much ride the same...

Your so right, I should have taken my check book, but I didn't. As it turns out I got five tickets on the R-1 while parking in front of the zook dealer's. Total cost...$770. I write a reaccount if anyones interested. I wanna puke.

I agree with all of the above comments and there is little point repeating the what others have said. There is one thing I can add however. A couple of weeks ago I went along to a ride day a track day. There were probably about 30 bikes participating. There were six R1s and only one Hayabusa (mine). I know the number of R1s is testament to the quality of the bike, but it is also good to ride something that not every other guy rides. It's a secondary reason I know, but for me it's still a valid one.

Hi, I'm new to this board. I owned a '99 R1 but I looped it in Oct. during a local wheelie contest. Even though I looped it on my last wheelie I still won the contest :-)

Well I just traded my R1 in for a Blue/Silver Busa 2 days ago. As someone already mentions earlier yes the R1 does have more leg room than the Busa but the Busa is still more comfortable and WOOHOO I have a windscreen now! :-) I love the Busa but I do miss my R1 a little. I really miss the wheelies. Oh well it didn't do 200mph so I'll get over it. When I first saw the 1300R last year I thought it was the ugliest bike I ever saw...but now when I look at it I love it. I don't think it looks better than a R1 but it looks good in it's own way. The R1's looks have been copied by other bikes(kawi 6r,9r, & 12r) the 1300R is original.
