Just Watched Food Inc.

I've heard a lot about this documentary from family and friends and never got around to watching it till tonight. Its a big reality shock in how a lot of our food is produced. Has anyone else seen this documentary? Wondered what everyone else thought of it. If you havn't seen it yet, its a good one to add to the list of "have to see".

Maybe I shouldn't watch it. In grade school, we went to the Swanson food factory where TV dinners were made. I haven't had a TV dinner for over 50 years.................I don't EVEN want to see meat processed.

my sister, the "activist", had a lot to say about this documentary. I've had it on my instant que for a while now. I imagine I'll watch it eventually

Yeah, I watched it and I was floored...it's not so much an "animal rights/PETA" thing, so don't shut yourself off to learning what you're really eating or why American farmers are in such dire straights...

I did a quick search the other day to see if anyone seen it, guess I missed that topic. Thanks for posting that up.
I agree it changes the way you think about where you want to get your food from.

I dont care where it comes from, its food, and as long as it hasnt killed me its fine. I havent seen the show yet so not sure what all it has in it, probably a video made by someone that has an agenda and skews it to what they want you to beleive. Slaughter houses arent all fun and pretty. Its a place to kill animals and process them for food, it wont be a nice place. Its just a large scale operation that does multiple animals ionstead of one or two at a time like a farmer would have done long ago.

It's a shame you don't care because if you look at the sheer numbers of cancer in our population compared to 100 years ago, the fact that so much of what we eat is so unnatural and that the animals we eat don't even eat what their bodies require, you might see a potential reason for the increase in disease. So yeah, I suppose you might even see that the foods we do eat are killing us.

Animal issues aside, what hit me more than anything about this documentary was just what American farmers have to tolerate to even survive. Don't shut yourself off because you assume this is all about animals, it's also about monopolies for genetically produced grains and how farmers are forced to either conform to what a monopoly demands or they go out of business. This isn't a PETA-related documentary and I do hope most that watch it have a whole new respect for farmers and what it takes to get food on your table.

I thought you guys were talking about that show on History (?) channel...with the big guy...good show.

I do think corporations bully smaller business owners and i always try to shop and dine at privately owned places....

However...i am not really concernced (at this point) about the "things put in foods" ...

because if you look at the sheer numbers of cancer in our population compared to 100 years ago

Cancer might have went up...but so did life expectancy ..considerably...

Final data for 2003 (the most recent
available) show that life expectancy at birth for the total population has reached an
all-time American high level, 77.5 years, up from 49.2 years at the turn of the 20th
century.

I am not saying we shouldn't keep an eye out for the things that are being used....just that sometimes the good outwieghs the bad on some of that stuff....we should look for alternatives to some of the things used though.

Oh I agree...I was simply tossing out a quick thought. I just took away from that documentary just how corrupt the farming industry can be and I was floored to find out just how much our demand for food affects what's fed animals, how grains are produced and why and what we're really eating. I wanted to impress that this isn't all about animal rights, though I won't lie, I've struggled with the slaughterhouse methods for years. I walked away from this movie floored at how the soy bean industry is run above all else, which was a shock to me...

Is this on TV or a movie rental...I'll have to check it out. The slaughterhouse methods never really bothered me to a point since i seen many animals killed on farms... I do not condone torturing the animals though!!! I think most US slaughterhouses now have ways to kill the animal quicker.... I don't know about outside the US though.

You are absolutely right though! We do need groups keeping an eye out on what is fed to animals...If people go unchecked we get "mad cow" events popping up.

Side note...there was a study done -----------------look away if you don't want to be grossed out--------------------- that showed the amount of blood, puss, and etc in store bought milk....as long as it is under a certain level it passes...... Now i am sure milk is safer now than it was years ago...still made me stop drinking milk for a while though....ewwww

I rented it on Netflix...not sure if it's been aired on regular TV yet, but it's worth a watch if nothing else than to see how heavy handed the industry is, and not in the best interest of health or the lives of farmers, but in the name of the almighty dollar. I know everything boils down to $, but it is disturbing to think our health takes a back seat to money. I guess it shouldn't shock me, but it does...

I stopped buying certain kinds of milk for years because of the additional hormones found in 'em...God only knows what's in the rest! ughhh...

Soy milk is pretty good! Especially the chocolate! if eating healthy wasn't so freaking expensive i would eat better more!....actually probably not...

Until they can make a veggie burget taste like the real thing i am screwed....My only weakness is burgers!

It is scary to think honestly how many different types of corporations (not just food) put the bottom line before quality and consumer interests......

I'm with you on the cost of eating better, organic, free range, etc...they touched on that in the movie, how it shouldn't be pricey, but for now, it seems to be a luxury item. They did also point out that a man was complaining about a dozen "free range" eggs costing $3, while he was standing there drinking a $1.79 soda  Comes down to your desire to change and prioritize I guess, and that's hard.

I shared this movie with my best friend and since then, her family of 5 has greatly increased their intake of organic and local grown produce and meats. It's not easy since we live in the sticks, and it's not cheap, but that movie impacted her and her husband that much that they opted to try to change...

Another topic they touched on is that the pricing we see for store bought products doesn't represent a true price. It appears to be cheap because much the farming industry is subsidized. We are paying more for it, just in taxes. Take away subsidies and things would change real quick.

Exactly...it was an eye-opener...

I hadn't really considered it from that angle. How very socialist is -that-?!

The more I learn about how this country fleeces "we the people", the more I realize that something has to be done. :banghead:
