If I want to burn HD videos to DVD do I need a HD dvd ?

You CAN burn HD content onto a standard DVD-5 (single layer disc) and have it play back in HD on a HD capable device. The benefit of having a bluray or hd-dvd write capable drive is so that you can put more data on the disc.

For example...a single layer, standard dvd holds 4.7Gb of data and a dual layer disc can hold 7.95Gb of data. A high definition media such as a blu-ray holds 25Gb for a single layer disc and 50Gb for a dual layer disc.

The main difference in these two formats is the laser being used.

I "believe" the gopro HD consumes about a gig of data every 8 minutes of video. So theoretically you can fit about 30 minutes of uncompressed HD footage on a standard single layer dvd.
