1. Live in a high fire or flood area...
2. Have have home in aforementioned area destroyed
3. Convince greedy insurance company it would be in their best interest to buy, as opposed to rent your temporary housing....
4. Keep saying no to their budget proposals for the purchase of aforementioned temporary living quarters until an "acceptable" amount is offered...
5. Most important step: convince wife of the many benefits of having a 5th wheel trailer with "garage space".
If you are really smooth, she will think it was her idea...
6. Do step 5 as many times as necessary....
Of course, over half a million went up in smoke, but I'm a "cup is half full" kind of guy, lol.
