When you guys ride with other riders in groups, how do you ride? Does everyone pretty much stay calm? Or is it a recurring cat and mouse race for everyone to be first?

Also, when riding in groups, do you do the speed limit?

I either make sure I stay out front or I ride a safe distance in the back so I can keep an eye on everyone. I am not a stickler for the speed limit but if the group gets to riding stupid I will take my own route.

lately I been riding with a fast crew. they speed a lot, and take sweepers and corners faster than I do. I get on it every now and again, but track days have really spoiled me and my street hooligan days have dropped significatly. I NEVER let others influence how I ride. I will never trust street surfaces and push their limits... I'll let others do that, and sure enough, they find the limit and wash out.

I don't ride with anyone that has ego problems. no thanks. they are simple to spot and I just stay away. does that make me snotty? WHO CARES! I call it smart.

Well said, WWJD. I have had some issues of late with my usual riding buddies because they seem to want to push the limits more than I do. I find myself avoiding them now because I have no desire to be in a group of varied experience who ride MUCH faster than what I consider safe on city streets.

I think the thing you want to do when you ride in a group is to find people whos riding style matches yours. Too fast? Too slow? let them do it with others who want to do the same thing. Ride at a speed that matches your skill level.

That's EXACTLY where I am right now, ibified..

My current group likes to ride alot faster than I do- I'm not saying it's WRONG, I'm just saying it's not what I'm in the game for.. I put my questions out to the group here because I have never gotten to ride with any other groups, and didn't know if what I'm running into is "the norm", or if it's just the particular group I'm with right now.

That's ajoke right???

Who does the speed limit?

Now I don't mean that I ride stupid. I am actually very safe and pass and speed when I know conditions are right.

Reminds me of the day I was riding with my buddy on a R1. We were on I95 heading for South Beach at aprox 90mph. A guy on a Sportbike passed us at bout 120-130 and my buddy took off after him, full chase in moderate traffic. Caught and passed the guy, in the process, creating a much greater risk of death/injury to himself. Stitching thru evening traffic at 150-160 mph is a risky proposition.

After we stopped, I asked him what was the point of chasing after someone and he responded that no one passes him! WTF? I thought that was pretty stupid.

On another note, me and him were riding slightly staggered and this asshat split between us on I95. This time I chased him, caught up, gave him the finger and told him to pull over. He took off and exited the freeway. Lots of idiots out there. I'm not one of them (most of the time!)

I ride my ride - at my age it's not too much fun for me to be riding someone else's. I couldn't care less if I'm the last one to get to the meeting place 'cause I get there in one piece and without any points on my license. Don't get me wrong - I've exceeded the speed limit once or twice or maybe more... but I'm not going to jeopardize life as I know it just to keep up with the rest of the bunch if it makes me uncomfortable. That's when accidents happen and the last thing I want to explain to my family is how stupid I can be. They're pretty sure they already know the answer to that one - I don't want to prove them right!

I always ride within my own limits, and not someone else's

Of course, speed limits and road conditions determine what "my" limits are at a particular moment.  So, sometimes that puts me ahead of the group, sometimes in the back.

The problem with many of the group rides is that the skill levels are too diverse. Track experienced, street experienced, novice. They always say ride your own ride. I've never had a problem having the fastest bike in the group, but riding at the back of the pack, but many people I talk to say they push harder trying to keep up in a group than they would riding alone.

Unfortunately, I've been at too many of these because of it.

i've only had my busa for 2 months. when i take my favorite ride
to the top of cheaha mountain (a favorite among the sport bike crowd)
if i see sport bikes in my rear view mirror i usually pull over to the right
and wave them past. i've only been 100+ a few times. i find myself
cruzing at 80-90 on the highway on the way to work. 50-60 on my Harley.
when i ride with my group speed limit +10 for safety. got the new star boyz dvd with ssb magazine. those guys doing 8 mile wheelies down
the interstate in traffic at 130-140.WOW

Pretty much solo here. My problem is that I tend to zone out in a group. Last group ride was two years ago. I was tired and fixated on the pack ahead. Next thing I know, I'm sliding off the road into a fence.

I let the stunters and hotdogs ride up front and keep a safe distance behind . One weekend a friend came out of a wheelie and went to a tank slapper then went down and caused 2 other bikes too close to react to go down . Totaled his Busa . Bent forks , front wheel bent , tire flat , gas tank wasted , no plastic unrashed , left handle bar broke , etc , etc , etc .....

I usually ride by myself so I don't have to listen to other people whine about how fast and unsafe I ride.

The worst for me is riding with a group, thru new roads to me with no knowledge on where I am or going to! It happens all the time. Start riding with one then tie up with others, they know where to go but I don't have a clue? They try to out do each other and I got to keep up or I'm callin on the cell after missing a turn, or the rest of the day playin tag! Ok your sayin learn where your goin jerk! How long does it take a rider from say Ohio or FL to learn the roads in the area of the dragon? I've been there 4 times and still can't find some of the great roads I rode on the first trip! Not knowing roads is a big disadvantage! It has made me do some stuff that I woke up the next day sayin NOW THAT WAS A DUMB!! Stuff like 150 past driveways on residential that was back roads a mile back! 120 into a second curve on a curvy road with a sign sayin 15 MPH, 50 into a decreasing turn in 5th gear! Thank the man I never dumped and now am lookin for others to ride with... Or like the way Central Florida riders seem to like it just alone. I don't blame the others, I can't keep up is my problem! But like any race the leader sets the pace! I will never lead racin on a public road! so I'll learn my own routs.
