This is a fairly interesting techincal discussion of Xenon/metal halide HID lamps. One can understand a bit better why some people may get longer life from their bulbs etc...
Good read, some new aircraft are coming with these lights installed, "CRJ 700" which is a 70 seat regional jet. But to mod. an aircraft with these lights requires FAA approval, if used commercially.

I've installed these systems on several aircraft as a conversion. All the systems are typically Bosch car systems and in two cases were the same identical part numbers to the Ford Focus SVT. Only difference...? The lighting kit was $2400.00 for two lamps and a fiberglass mount.
