HID Kit questions

hey guys. while I'm sure this has been discussed before, I can't seem to find anything to answer my specific questions.

First lets start with my reasoning. several memebers of my club have been hit by cagers recently, so my moto club (an all make and type club, not Busa specific) is doing a big push to make our bikes more visible. Many memebers are going the headlight modulator route. In fact I just finished installing a modulator on my Moms trike. However, I don't really like the modulators myself. I also feel that in order to install it on the Busa I'd have to pull the whole nose apart. so i figured if i'm gonna have to pull the nose apart anyway, why not look at something that will also help me see better at night since I do tend to do alot of night riding. (I commute to and from work on my Busa daily)

So I've started looking at HID kits. unfortunately I don't know much about them.

what type of kit is everyone using? single bulb or dual bulb? I obviously want the better high beam for daytime visibility, and I also want a brighter low beam for nighttime visibility for myself and the cagers out there. So do i want the dual beam kit to replace both the high and low bulbs then?
Also, it seems there are different bulb sizes. which size bulb do I need to replace the stockers without having to do too much cutting in the headlight housing? I'm no stranger to fab work or modifying things, but I really dont think i want to have to mess with the headlight housing too much.

what kits are everyone using and where are you buying them? the xenonking.com kits seem well priced, are they any good?

edit: after a bit more reading, whats the deal with a delay switch or relay? is there something about the HIDs that you can fry them when starting the bike if they are on? is a relay included with the kits? what do i need to take into consideration where starting is concerned?

thanks in advance for your input

There is so much info on HIDs here it's unreal. Here's a few pages of search topics: . Most all of the discussion will bring you back to McCulloch kits from XenonKing.

Here is a great link, and bigGeorge is a personal friend of mine, and will take care of you.

So as far as the switch goes, late model busas cut the headlight during stat up which interupts the charging of the HID. So they wire in a switch and turn the HID on after the bike is running.

I have had no problem with my 01.

now as far as visibility, I only have a low beam and it is brighter than any high beam bulb you can buy.

I have a 2005 with the HID and have had no problems, I do not have the delay relay to turn the bulb on after the bike has been started. It is very bright and I highly recomend getting one. As far as I know there are different color of the HID. I have the 6000k bulb, it has a little hue of blue to it and looks really great. Try Zenonking.com. I bet they can answer all your questions. good luck.

Here's how to wire using the DEI 528T Delay Switch

The pics are kind of confusing since I had to pull the wires out of the bike to get the pics.

Hopefully you can understand the text better. I'll describe what to do here. THIS IS HOW I WIRED MY LOW BEAM HID DELAY TIMER.

The DEI 528T Pulse timer has 6 wires coming out of it and a blue loop wire.

1. Yellow and Red Wires on 528T

Take the Red and Yellow wires on the 528T and tie them together and add a male spade connector. Then insert this spade connector into the bikes OEM headlight connector on the (+) side or the side with the white wire going to it. You may have to remove some of the plastic connector you added so it will allow the spade to slide into the bikes connector.

2. Solid Black wire on 528T

Take the Black wire and cut it off at about 2 or 3 inches from the 528T box and then prep the end of the wire by removing 1/4 inch of the insulation. Take the new piece of Black wire (the one you just cut off) prep both ends of the wire. Take one end of the new Black wire and twist together with the Black wire on the 528T that is now 2 or 3 inches long and add a female spade connector. This spade connector needs to connect to the male spade Black wire on the HID high voltage box. You should have one end of Black wire not connected.

3. Black wire with White stripe on 528T

Twist this wire with the leftover Black wire from step 2 and add a male spade connector. Then insert this spade connector into the bikes OEM headlight connector on the (-) side or the side with the black wire going to it. You may have to remove some of the plastic connector you added so it will allow the spade to slide into the bikes connector. In this pic on the right you should see two black wires, one of those is the extra end from step 2 and the other is the Black wire with White stripe, the stripe is on the other side.

4. Orange wire on 528T

Add a female spade connector to this wire and connect it to the HID High Voltage box male spade White wire.

5. Brown wire on 528T

Brown wire is not used

6. Blue loop wire on 528T

DO NOT CUT LOOP WIRE!!! Leave it alone. I cut mine and it did not work.

At this point you should have no extra wires except for the Brown.

There may be other ways to use this box, but this way worked for me.

Use the Screw setting on the 528T to set the amount of delay you want to have. Keep in mind longer delay is better as I have noticed I fumble around (gettting bike in neutral, checking ON/OFF switch etc) after turning the key on sometimes and need a little extra time to get the bike started.

Good luck.

I am gonna search for all of the HID delay questions and post this too.
