I know a ton of people on here have installed HID into there bikes. Has anyone found a solution to the HID flickering ( and sometimes cutting out) when you start the bike?
Many people have put switches on to shut them off, and only run them when they want to. I like things as seemless as possible and a switch cut into the inners or even the "add-on" switch on the bars doesn't look right to me.
So I was wondering if anyone had tried to put a some kind of time delay or relay to postpone the power to the HID for a few seconds while the bike is started. I apologize if i missed it while searching but it seemed the extra switch was the most common fix.

I was in the same boat as you. I didn't want extra switches cause they don't look right. So I did something different. I rewired my high & low beam to operate seperately with 2 standard SPDT relays. (hidden inside fairing). Easiest way to explain it is that now my high beam switch is now a headlight switch. During the daytime (and when I start the bike) the projector high beam is on and when it gets dark, flip the switch to "high beam" and my HID kicks on. Solved 2 problems, my HID isn't normally on so no flickering of the ballast (and wear/tear on it) and I think it's cool looking (and different) having only the projector light up during the daytime. Also have a yellow ion bulb in it too, so I stand out to the idiot car drivers on the road..

I CAD'd a schematic of the wiring of the 2 relays if you want it.

Linky - 8-second delay timer

I got one to put on my bike. Turns on your HID 8 seconds after you turn on the ignition. As long as you start your bike within 8 secs...you should be fine.

Just saw the thread again,sorry......I ran the wires that power the ballast up to one of the switches.

Here's how to wire using the DEI 528T Delay Switch

The pics are kind of confusing since I had to pull the wires out of the bike to get the pics.

allwires.jpg

Hopefully you can understand the text better. I'll describe what to do here. THIS IS HOW I WIRED MY LOW BEAM HID DELAY TIMER.

The DEI 528T Pulse timer has 6 wires coming out of it and a blue loop wire.

1. Yellow and Red Wires on 528T

Take the Red and Yellow wires on the 528T and tie them together and add a male spade connector. Then insert this spade connector into the bikes OEM headlight connector on the (+) side or the side with the white wire going to it. You may have to remove some of the plastic connector you added so it will allow the spade to slide into the bikes connector.

2. Solid Black wire on 528T

Take the Black wire and cut it off at about 2 or 3 inches from the 528T box and then prep the end of the wire by removing 1/4 inch of the insulation. Take the new piece of Black wire (the one you just cut off) prep both ends of the wire. Take one end of the new Black wire and twist together with the Black wire on the 528T that is now 2 or 3 inches long and add a female spade connector. This spade connector needs to connect to the male spade Black wire on the HID high voltage box. You should have one end of Black wire not connected.

3. Black wire with White stripe on 528T

Twist this wire with the leftover Black wire from step 2 and add a male spade connector. Then insert this spade connector into the bikes OEM headlight connector on the (-) side or the side with the black wire going to it. You may have to remove some of the plastic connector you added so it will allow the spade to slide into the bikes connector. In this pic on the right you should see two black wires, one of those is the extra end from step 2 and the other is the Black wire with White stripe, the stripe is on the other side.

4. Orange wire on 528T

Add a female spade connector to this wire and connect it to the HID High Voltage box male spade White wire.

5. Brown wire on 528T

Brown wire is not used

6. Blue loop wire on 528T

DO NOT CUT LOOP WIRE!!! Leave it alone. I cut mine and it did not work.

At this point you should have no extra wires except for the Brown.

There may be other ways to use this box, but this way worked for me.

Use the Screw setting on the 528T to set the amount of delay you want to have. Keep in mind longer delay is better as I have noticed I fumble around (gettting bike in neutral, checking ON/OFF switch etc) after turning the key on sometimes and need a little extra time to get the bike started.

Good luck.

I am gonna search for all of the HID delay questions and post this too.

Good write up^. Thanks for all the info and I just got my 528T Pulse timer in today. Going to print your instructions and hit the garage tonight.

I bought it from Auto Preservers (@ 30 bucks CAN and shipped) and got great service (I screwed up my shipping address).

Install went great.

Actually took the time to clean up a few things in there too (I run Hi and Low HID, heated grips, and a switchable TRE).  Everything is nicely wrapped in electrical tape, zapped, secured and routed well now.

Left the delay unit under the nose but made sure I could easily re-set the time delay by popping the lower cover off (same cover as you take off to re-aim lights.  Delay set at 10 secs and works great.

Thanks again for the write up.  It was the difference between getting it done or not.

God only knows how you figured it out!!
