I heard this riddle over 5 years ago. I decided to use it on some of my co-workers and they hounded me all freaking night for the answer. I love watching them suffer, so I didn't bother to give it to them. Here it goes.
-----------------------------------------
3 businessmen meet up at a resturant for a little business dinner. When they received the check, it came out to exactly $26. Each man decided to pay $10 each in order to cover the bill.

The waiter comes, collects the check along with the money, takes it to the register, places the $30 in it and removes $4 for the businessmen change. As he was walking back to the table he realized the 3 men would have to split $4. With that thought, he decided to make it easier on them by taking $1 as his tip and giving the men back $3 so they may split it exactly $1 a piece. Upon arriving at the table, he explained to the men what he had done, they agreed to it.

<span style='color:red'>Now to pick your brain.

Each man chipped in $10 and received $1 as change. That would mean each one spent $9 on the meal.

If you multiply the $9 spent by the 3 men, you'll get $27.

Add the $1 the waiter took as a tip to the $27 spent by the businessmen, you get $28.

The meal was $30 .... where did the other $2 go?

, but what 2 bucks are you refering to.

The bill was 26 the waiter kept 1 and returned 3 = 30...

Look at it from the businessmen perspective. They each paid $10 and got back $1, thus, they each actually paid $9.

$9 x 3 men = $27
$27 + $1 for waiter = $28

Ok, then why are you adding another $1 for the waiter???

The 3 men paid $9 cause they all got $1 change from the waiter so the $9 would include the waiter portion... correct???

no offense.... but you are adding the tip for the waiter twice...

You are trying to look at it from two different sides...

Stick with one and the brain cramp will go away..

If not think about it more, drink beer until headache gone...

Meal = $26
Men paid = $30
Change is = $4
Waiter kept tip = $1
Men ultimately paid (ea) = $9

Meal + Tip = $27

Whaddya askin'?? Everything is accounted for!!!!

It's just like me saying that I have 11 digits on my hand!

...if I start counting digits backwards on one hand... "10-9-8-7-6" (then add the other) "plus these 5 = 11"

Meal = $26
Men paid = $30
Change is = $4
Waiter kept tip = $1
Men ultimately paid (ea) = $9

Meal + Tip = $27
Like you said, men paid 9

If each paid 9 ... they paid a total of 27 (9 x 3). If you add the 1 the waiter took, that'll be 28. I'm sleepy now
yeah but you are still adding the tip for the waiter twice....

this is kinda like the following riddle provided with the answer:

RIDDLE:

3 men go into a motel. The receptionist tells them the room will be $30. Each man pays $10 before going to the room. The clerk then realizes that they were given only a $25 room, and sends the bellhop to the room with $5. The bellhop keeps $2 [as a tip?] and each man gets $1 back, ending up paying only $9 for the room. Three times $9 is $27. With the $2 the bellhop kept, that's only $29. Where's the missing dollar?

ANSWER:
The bellhop's tip ($2) should not be added,
but subtracted from the total paid ($27)
to obtain the price of the room ($25).

Hah! I was gonna link to this!

Yup, same principle.

The key is in the fact that the waiter TOOK $1. He didn't ADD a dollar.

SUBTRACT, not ADD!!!

--Wag--

Oops. You already have the answer on here.

--Wag--

The meal was $27.  $26 for the food plus $1 for the waiter's tip.  Each man paid $9 for a total of $27.  End of discussion.
