Harley-Davidson to build bikes in India

The iconic American motorcycle brand, Harley-Davidson, has announced plans to build an assembly plant in India.Harley-Davidson, the iconic American motorcycle brand with a cult-like following, has announced it has chosen to build its second assembly plant ever outside the United States in India.

The "complete knock down" plant or CKD is expected to be up and running in the northern Indian state of Haryana in first half of 2011. Parts made in America will be put together for the Indian market in Haryana.

"What we are doing is made in USA, assembled in India, which will have a positive job effect back home which is why we are driving this investment as quickly as we are," Anoop Prakash managing director for Harley Davidson India told CNN.

The company is trying to expand its brand internationally from 30 to 40 percent by 2014 according to Prakash and India plays an important role in that.

"We see a distinctive credible growth story here, growth opportunity," he said.

India is the second fastest growing two-wheeler market in the world behind China. More than 10 million two-wheelers were sold in India in the 2009-2010 fiscal year. Beyond the obvious market potential there is another major reason Harley-Davidson is building an assembly plant in India -- to bring down India's import duties which right now are so high Indian consumers pay double for fully assembled imported vehicles. Exporting just the parts to India could lower the import duty tariffs by around 80 percent according to Prakash.

Harley-Davidson's story in India began in 2007 with a trade agreement that allowed India to export mangoes to America in exchange for allowing the United States to export Harley-Davidsons to India.

The company said it is on target to sell 200-250 bikes in the first six months in India. The high-end bikes went on sale in the county in July 2010.

Gurgaon resident Vikram Bhalla was the first to ride off with one in India.

"I've always wanted a Harley when I was growing up. I had little posters on my wall. I remember seeing Harley-Davidson and the Marlborough man, remember the old movies. It made people look so cool, so I thought why not?" Bhalla said.

The company hopes there are many more people like Bhalla in the India market. Harley-Davidson is opening its fifth dealership in Bangalore, India this month

Ever ridden a Royal Enfield AFTER they moved the plant from England to India.

IF SO, ENOUGH SAID

OH Yeah, did you know HARLEY is threating to close the KC plant ! Good Ole Americans working together FOR AMERICA :banghead:

I never thought I would live to see the day. I am sure this will not sit well with the Harley crowd.
When I had Harleys I never liked the fact that all their overpriced clothing was made in China.
Let's not make it a Political thing, How about we find ways to make more in the USA again at fair wages.

If they are building bikes in India for the Indian market its a smart move. Import taxes into India are stupid high. Assembling them there should eliminate the tax and they'll be able to move more bikes at a lower price without reducing their profit per bike.

As soon as the furor dies down my bet is that they will be importing bikes assembled in India for the American market as well .

to do that you would have to get rid of the Union, they are the main problem with the country today anyway, but you can't make a union worker see that, they like being lazy. :poke:

I'm no HD fan, but they are importing the PARTS and assembling them in India because the taxes are prohibitive if they import completed vehicles.

HD is dying, they're just trying to expand so they don't close shop.

With that said, I think HD will do poorly in the Indian market. I don't think HD has any 150cc bikes that get 90 mpg.

Any of you guys ever been to India :;): ? I can't see anywhere a Big Harley Rig would be manageable in traffic day to day. You can nearly walk faster with all their traffic. It's HOT (you haven't been hot until you've been in India's heat) , HUMID (your shirt and unde's even sweat) and IT's the PITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTS

Been there, Done that, and I don't remember anything I left that I want to go back to get

^ Exactly.

Interestingly enough, all the Indians I know in America (I know a lot), none of them ride bikes. They had enough of that crap and prefer cars. lol.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm so exactly what are the Harley riders going to be able to say when we start comparing bikes now.

Thats all they had, and usually the last thing I hear, Well at least mine is an American Bike.

I've been there multiple times. The upper class will buy them to go along with the SBK they have in the garage. HD may also follow the other manufacturers and build India only models for the masses in India.

I know folks from when they lived in India and all they talked about is bike bike bike, and have now been in the states for a few years and are bikeless. The reasons for that is they are apprehensive of our bigger heavier bikes traveling at three times the speed. Also, when they go back to India, they will be able to get a bike again, they probably won't be able to get a car again.

I worked for John Deere and most of the crap that they build their tractors here with comes from India. around 60% if I had to take an educated guess, another 25% or better comes from China. Do the math and this stuff is junk. Engine parts, Trans parts, you name it. Same thing will happen to Harley. outside of Americans losing their jobs I really couldnt care less about Harley. I do quality inspections and have seen all this first hand and tested Indian goods. As for the unions ruining this country wrong again sparky. The unions along with the present socialist regime in washington have hurt our country but they are not the cause. If the elected officials were not mostly crooks at best and were not prostituting themselves for the almighty dollar then the unions would not have the ability to buy what they wanted. Primarily votes and General motors. So blame the washington pimps for our woes, not the unions. Ah thank you.

yeah...its not the Unions....it the politicians in Washington that take the bribes from the UNIONS...lol

maybe, if HD sold less of the "IMAGE" and actually made a modern motorcycle that could compete with the bikes from Japan and Europe they would not be in such bad shape.

4 things HD needs to do to be successful:
1. make a decent entry level bike
2. tell thier dealers to sell the entry level bike, and not insult potential buyers like they do with sportster buyers and BUELL buyers
3. price thier products so that people can buy them.

4. stop living in the 1960's, its not cute that a $20k bike is less reliable, slower, heavier and has crappier brakes than a bike for half its price.
