Gutting stock midpipes???

I put my new 2 brothers slip ons on my 06 today and noticed that there is a muffler inside the midpipe. I was curious to know if anyone has cut this out and gutted them??

i put yosh slip ons on my 05 and noticed this. I cut the pipe in half and removed the baffle and packing and had them welded back together. I couldn't tell much diffence in the sound of the exhaust after all of the work and no diffence in performance. I ended up putting a full system on the bike. i wouldn't spend the time doing it.

Is the muffler just perforated metal around the perimeter? I have an extra set of midpipes and it is clear all the way through except for that spot.
