What's your goal? Drilling the cans can be done in less than an hour without removing the cans from the bike. I think the drilled cans sound as good as any of the aftermarket bolt-ons.
If you really need to completely gut the cans, you'll need to removed them from the bike and go to work from the in side of the can. You have about a 3 inch hole cut and rip everything out through. Kind of like building a ship in a bottle in reverse.
Are slip-ons out of the question? $400 or less? I did this and then later on stepped up to a full system, then you can sell the slip-ons to recoup the upgrade!
