Gray Market Bike Registration

I'm a new member here and I am also a member of GS Resources. I just bought a 2007 Hayabusa from a dealership here in California. The bike is in mint condition with 8,000 miles on it and a full Yoshimura exhaust system as well as an ignition kill and alarm. I got it for $4,500.00 because it is a gray market bike imported from France. I have the title and all the paperwork for the bike; however, it is not emissions legal here and cannot be registered. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem? I have thought of registering it as a special construction vehicle or buying a used frame and going that route. I'd like to find the easiest and least expensive route to get it handled. Post, PM or send an e-mail to genebates@verizon.net

:welcome:........first time hearing of this.. sorry I can't help but someone here will be able to give you advice... this is a great community

we used to import Grey market cars and it is probably pretty similar..
Cars required a number of hard changes and also had to pass emissions inspection and IM240 standards testing (this was almost 20 years ago)

You need to find an importer to make this as simple as possible due to customs etc..

Lights must be USA legal (we had to remove HID's)
Catalysts and AIR injection systems had to be installed
Unleaded only restriction installed (no longer applicable)
Emissions standards met on certified dyno/emissions machine
Current title/certificate of origin presented and surrendered

a new tag is issued and installed in the door jam of car

we brought over 15 cars over 3 years and it was about $5G per car

My guess would be the cat, lights, and emissions will be what you need to worry about.. Safety equipment is probably not going to be an issue at all (bumpers, air bags etc)

Can anyone take any good pictures of the safety and emissions decals on their bike? I can have some made and problem solved. That's the only thing keeping it from being registered; as an international bike it is missing those two decals that US bikes are given. I think they are on the frame somewhere and they are NOT individualized for each bike.

:welcome: and check with your local dealership to see if they can get the decals or look at another bike that has them. :beerchug:

you can order the decals from suzuki or bike bandit or any other oem parts distributer

You might be able to buy OEM from dealer. Should be cheap. No one around here has them

It might just be me, but that's half what that bike is worth and they had to ship it.

Sorry for being AWOL, been out riding the bike since I brought it home. I got the registration issue straightened out by getting a letter from Suzuki that states the bike meets US requirements. I love this thing, so much power, so smooth and so agile! This coming from someone who just timewarped from a minty 1984 Suzuki GS1150ES to a 2007 Hayabusa.

Nice! Glad you were able to get it handled without too much hassle.

Very nice GS1150 by the way! :beerchug:

Hey there! :welcome:

Nice to see a fellow GS-er on the board. Sounds like the registration issue is handled and you're well into enjoying the ride.

Congrats and welcome! :thumbsup::beerchug:

BTW, that 82 1100 is gorgeous! I'm always amazed to see the great condition that has been preserved in some of those classic rides.:bowdown:
