I'm meeting with the Army recruiter this week...I already talked to him over the phone, and seem's like a great guy.

Are there any tips that you guys have? Anything to look for, bring, ask?

I'm going to go and talk to the Marine Corps recruiter shortly after...does anyone here know if there is a Marine Reserve infantry?

The Army recruiter said there is NO Combat Arms mos's in the Army Reserve, is there Combat Arms mos's in the Marine Reserves? ???

I was i the corps back in 89' no reserve infintry but as a marine your first MOS will always be infintry, whatever you get as a secondary MOS if needed on the combat field you will go.

how old are you?

is this a spare of the moment decision,if so I really hope you think it through,it isnt for everyone, just a quick eye opener for you, when I went to boot back in 89 we started with 78 recruits, graduated 54.like I said, not for everyone

goodluck

Just keep in mind these guys are salesmen. It is their job to make everything sound great and to sell you on the idea that you want to enlist.

They usually have a list of certain jobs they need filled and will do their best to stear you in the direction they need you to go.

I would make it a point to also talk to Navy, Air Force and even the Coast Guard. Yes I did say Coast Guard. If you are looking at a career in law enforcement after the military the Coast Guard would be a great start, especially if you are interested in something like a DEA job. Different branches will need to fill different slots and by talking to all of them you are effectively covering all your options.

Infantry isn't a bad thing, but if you can get the government to give you some type of specialized training, especially something that has a use in the civilian world, you will be helping yourself in the long run.

and you aent garunteed an MOS,they will promise you one thing but said above, they are filled on as needed bases, when you get out of boot you may be headed elswhere for trining and you dont have a say

you could wind up as a damn cook,I was bulk fuel specialist (gas grunt)

Man do NOT just limit yourself to the Army or Marines man talk with all the services find out what they have to offer you. Main thing is nothing is set in stone until you go to MEPS (Militarty Entrance Processing Station). This is what I would do if I were you and if I was doing it all over again with the knowledge I have now go get your Physical and ASVAB knocked out that way you know with out a doubt that you are qualified for Military service then once that is complete then talk to each service about what programs they have to offer based on your ASVAB score and Phyiscal. Then once you find that out come back and discuss that with us I know that we have plenty of service members here that can guide you young man in the right direction. But like I said nothing is set in stone until you pick your job at MEPS with the liason personnel

Im currently in the USMC. Think about it before you join i was all about it before i joined but ive been screwed every way you can think. Like devldog said you aint promised a job i was supposed to work on jet engines but i got stuck fixing dang ejection seats and ecs systems. I in iraq as we speak ive missed the last two christmas in a row along with thanksgiving, mine and my wifes 1st and 2nd aneversary, i missed my daughter being born a few weeks ago. Thankfully i got less than 2 years left ive been in for 3. I signed up for this so i cant really blame anyone but myself and i like the fact that i can say i did something for my country. Just be ready to not see your family and spend lots of time in iraq. Its a crappy time to join cause all the fun deployments are gone Ive got 3 deployments to iraq in 5 years and 1 of those years i was in mos school so good luck with whatever decision you make

Did you get it in your contract to work on jet engines? ???

From what I've been told, as long as you have what they promise you in writing, you'll get what you want.

How about the Air Force ???
Make sure you have a MOS before going. DO NOT GO GENERAL.

Read the promise closely. there are a lot of MOSs that can only be guaranteed the field and not he specific job. I was guaranteed communications, as I wanted Computers.. but could have just as easily been a radio or telephone guy.

I'm 18 years old.

And no, this isn't a spare of the moment decision. I've been thinking about military service for some-time now.

Oh, and I'm sure I would be just fine in bootcamp. The only problem I would have is home-sickness, but everyone gets that.

Nothing is etched in stone yet, I may talk to the recruiters and decide it's not for me.

But as of right now, I'm thinking about joining.

Thanks all of you for your thoughts...it's nice to know that there are people who care.

if your not sure sign up for the short term. you can always re-enlist if you like it.

Would it be bad to take the contract to an attourney? ???

I want infantry, and to be a Weapons/Engineer Sgt with special forces...but I DON'T want to end up a medic (just not my cup of tea).

Not a bad Idea to take your contract an attorney. Also remember to read the fine print... 4 years active + 4 years inactive reserve automatic.

DON'T FORGET THE AIR FORCE!!!!!

Telling ya, it's a great way to go. If you want to get dirty you can do that, but if you want to serve and come out with some useful real world skill, (Last I heard not a lot of call for Rifleman in the Civi-world) and you'll get better accommodations, food, treatment, education and basic services while you're in.

Choose from DEsk Job to SOF Elite, but Air Force is a great way to go. Don't get too hung up on "infantry" or Rifleman. Nothing wrong with it, but there's a lot more out there to be had and you don't want to waste this opportunity...

I wish I could be 18 again. Boy did I waste a golden opportunity. At the time my dad was dating the sister of a US Congressman. Ate Christmas dinner with the guy several times, had quite a bit of contact with him and got to know him rather well. I think back of the referral I could have had, especially with my ASVAB scores and HS grades :banghead:

If I had it to do over again and knew then what I know now, I would've went Air Force in a heartbeat and never looked back.

my girlfriend's younger brother just got out of high school, enlisted at 17, graduated and was gone within a few weeks after he turned 18. His family was pretty angry that he signed up with the war and all going on but I was behind him. My best friend enlisted and its done wonders for him (joined 13yrs ago and is now a CSM@Ft Sill). Her bother was in a rather sheltered house and his parents were very controlling. He absolutely loved boot camp and loves the army. He's a computer geek and got some computer geek MOS and is thrilled. I was afraid he would wash out, cuz he's about 120lbs @ 5'10ish (think toothpick, concave chest and all) but he's done wonderfully. The army figured out that the kid needed glasses, got him to put weight on, everything. Its done wonders for him and my best friend... you get out of it what you put into it.

Defintely consider other branches of the service. I can tell you from going to various bases, AF bases definitely have better services, food, quarters and generally quality of their offices are better. Go into it with a good attitude and strive to exceed all expectations they have of you and you will go far :beerchug:

I got out of the marines in 90 went in with a guaranteed job ( Barracks Duty )..and I got my job problem was I was suppose to do my 4 years there and in the process there was a change of command and the new 1st sgt made it an 18 month duty station then shipped your ass to the fleet...but all in all it was a Great experience and I don't regret it at all...Many lifetime memories and close friends...If I had to do it all over again knowing what I know and saw I would go Air Force all the way and make a career of it...They have it made hands down...From Chow to living quarters to opportunities!... Marines yeah your tough and respected but you live like animals...Army thats the bottom of the barrel...Navy...just flat out GAY!.with the exception of their elite (seals)..If you do choose the marines or army forget infantry go directly for special forces unit..I finished my last 18 month in recon and it was the ****!!

Prior AF here, and if I had it to do all over again I would find any way I could to get my degree and then go in as an officer.
