Everytime I call my local dealer for any part, they dont have it in stock!
I'm talking about any little thing! I bet they dont even have the cotter pin for the rear axel.
Why is this? Now I can understand why your bike will be in the shop for 2 weeks for any routine maintenance....

Yep ! Everything is 3 to 10 business days .

They seem to keep ZX 14's in stock all the time !

I would think it's a situation unlike cars. To keep thousands of $$$ worth of parts on hand that you might not use for 6 months is bad economical business. And since 90% of the people who ride bikes have autos also, to keep all the parts they would need to service every bike would put them in a deep financial hole. Especially if they are told they can get any part in 3 days by the manufacture. And if you don't like waiting, believe me, DON'T buy a Ducati or any Itallian or German Bike

I agree. I do everything I can to support local business, but this 2-3 day thing just sucks because you know it turns into 5 business days. My guy in Westport, MA - Creative Cycle Works - is pretty good with getting things to me overnight and beating Internet prices when he can.

I think alot of it has to do with storage also. There are tons of different parts for different types of bikes and most motorcycle dealerships dont have very much room dedicated to storage. I do think they should have common, everyday parts, like cotter pins, oil filters and plugs in stock though.

I can confirm that first hand. STM slipper clutch...7 weeks. Old Europe closes for "holiday" in the summer.

Yeah its the same at my local shop. I have no clue why they dont stock OEM parts.

I needed pads for the rear - they weren't available locally and if they were they would have been $27.00 + tax. I ended up getting Galfer's for $29.00 to my door from Kim at Cal-Sportbike. Unless I am balls to the wall screwed I don't even bother shopping locally.

I just got off the phone with Kim and ordered a s.s. clutch line from Galfer. And no,this is not what I was trying to get from my local dealer.

She sounded pretty hot on the phone, but I've been fooled before specially with those dang 1-900 gurls!!

We have over 122,000 parts at the shop up north. That's just individual part numbers, not total number of each.

So here's the thing. My shop has all four Japanese brands.

Honda
Kawasaki
Suzuki
Yamaha

We also have Polaris and Arctic Cat.

Now lets look closely at the breakdown :

Honda:
-Street Bikes
-Dirt Bikes
-ATVs
-Scooters
-Watercraft

Kawasaki:
-Street Bikes
-Dirt Bikes
-ATVs
-Watercraft

Suzuki:
-Street Bikes
-Dirt Bikes
-ATVs
-Scooters

Yamaha:
-Street Bikes
-Dirt Bikes
-ATVs
-Scooters
-Watercraft
-Snomobiles

Arctic Cat:
-ATVs
-Snomobiles

Polaris:
-ATVs
-Snomobiles

OK So there are 6 families, and 23 genus.

SO NOW, we have to find the species OK. Well in each Genus we have say... 7 seperate variations or species. You know everything from the 50cc dirt bikes to the 450CC MX bikes in a particular genus.

SO Lesse, that's 161 (minimum) individual machines in one year. OK That's not too bad right? Right? HA!

Now then take 161 individual machines, and pull them through time, revisions, and evolutions.

So that's 161x oh lets say 15 years....

So now we have 2,415 individual machines cool?

OK now take each one of those machines, and say they have about 250 parts on average. Some more some less, some ALOT more.

So that means there are roughly 603,750 potential parts just for those machines we sell...

Hell cannot imagine WHY a dealership would Dare NOT to have every single part for each of our bikes in stock and ready to go.

Dealers order parts and replacements based on how often they are ordered, and common wear items. Certain things, Dirt bike fork seals, etc. are frequently replaced and thus stocked. Otherwise, it's not to uncommon to have to wait for a part, sucks but there is no way around it.

One thing that can helpis careful maintenance and frequent inspection. this alone can catch suspect parts and damage before something fails, giving you a chance to order with plenty of time to spare...

As for Cotter pins and such? You know you're going to need them, why not find out the size and pick some up from Lowe's? Not too hard to plan ahead.
