GEARING ??????'s

I have recently spoken with a great tuner about gearing.  I was planning on goin all out w/new chain and sprockets.  But he said to start out with lowering just the front to start.  I am planning on replacing my chain in the spring anyways.  So I would appreciate some opinions on what to run... I want more low end grunt.

Welcome to the board. My understanding is that your gearing choice for the best acceleration ( or low end grunt as you so eliquently put it :D ) should be based on your bodyweight. There are people here who are far more qualified than I am to help you make the right choice though. Maybe they will chime in and help. In the meantime you might post your bodyweight to help them help you... ;)

i kinda want to jump in with a question too. i weight 170 and i notice alot of guys the ride busa's are like 6'0 200lbs. i want to lower my bike like fstbusa 2" rear 1.5" front and the reason is so that i can get on the gas without it coming up that easy and the look :D. now my question is will i need to gear it to get the front end up by just rolling on the throttle or am i light enough that 1st gear throttle wheelies are still possible on a dropped busa.

Well for starters thanks for the welcome... and I a big guy 6'2 285. I have read in a lot of different places that a 16 is the way to go.... but I was thinkin bout goin with a 15 or even a 14 (keep in mind that I am going to purchase a new chain in the spring) possibly even new sprockets. Also I have a curiosity in lowering my bike as well. Any input would be great :)

Given your weight (I, too, am a big dude) you fall into the same weight category for gearing as I do. The gearing advice I got for my weight from a prominent drag tuner was 16t front sprocket and a 42t rear. Apparently it takes a bit more gearing to get us bigger guys flyin'. ;) I'll probably be installing the above gearing and a new chain soon. I'll be sure and post the results.

As for lowering, I can't really help. I've done a little research but haven't made a decision myself on the matter. I'll likely start out with a set of dog bones in the center hole and about an inch of drop up front and see how it does there. I don't want to completely kill twisty handling but I am definitely going to end up doing my hard riding at the drag strip and just riding sanely for fun on the street. I think I'm ready to make some compromises in all out twisty handling to get it to 1/4 mile hard. I want NINES! :D

Maybe someone else will chime in with more info on lowering. ;)

not trying to hi jack this thread... but.........could some one tell me if you could change the rear sprocket out,( with out taking the rear tire all the way off... in other words; could I just pull out the axle , while the bike is on a race stand, support the tire and slide off the old sprocket? thanks for any help...

You're gonna have to remove the axle to get the sprocket off even if you can get it loose without removing the wheel completely. The wheel will basically be completely removed and just sitting between the swingarm rails anyway. Why not set it out where you can work on it easier? :super:

Don't go with anything smaller than a 16 on the front!
It will rub.
If you want more gear than the 16, you will need to ADD teeth to the rear.
Try the 16 first.
If you want more, add at that time. I would say that a 42 would be sufficient.

SLEEPER,

What is "it" and what will "it" rub if you go smaller than a 16t up front? :super: Not being cute. I'm serious. I don't know... I'm assuming that the chain will rub on the top of the swing arm but I'd like to know if I'm wrong. ;)

You go to a 14 and you will be replacing a lot more then a chain. It will be chain sprokets and possible tran damage. 15 is pushing it. You can go to a 16 and then go larger in the back if you want more.

Mike, I believe that it rubs on the rubber peice on the front of the arm.
You know, up towards the front, right before the front sprocket?
I forget what it's called.

I'm running a 16/42 works great for me 6 ft. 190 lbs.

As everyone else has stated, "do not go lower than 16 in the front"...

6'2" 250 16/42 is the way to go...If you gear it to low up front and to high in the rear you will render 1st gear useless...The bike will pull much hard with this setup than stock...MUCH...Lowering the bike in my opinion didn't do much to keep it from wheeling...If you get in it hard it still wheelies the same...Solution swingarm... Oh yeah...16/42 you can use the stock chain until you just want to buy a new one...If you swap the rear get a steel sprocket the bike eats alum. like it does kaws...

Forgot...I ride stock height in front...And I'm 1" low in the rear...I strap the front at the track...

My little pick up there on the left is with the bike low in the rear...

Hell, the way she wants to wheelie now at anything close to full throttle I'm wondering if I even want to re-gear her right now. I won't get to the drag strip until next spring anyway so I may just wait and get a little more use out of the stock chain and sprockets. I know I'll want more gearing when I start racing but right now I'm fine. Not racing on the streets.

I really don't want to stretch the busa but if I want to drag race it seriously I may have to. I wonder how much help a two inch wheelbase extension would help, if any... In addition to lowering of course. :super:

Cool, thanks. I know what you're talking about now... except I have no idea who Mike is? :super: Hehehehehehe...

Holy poop Train.
I guess I oughta pay more attention to WHO is askin the questions.

I've been workin so much, I hit and run on the board, so I can get some sleep.

I tell you what. If "mike" is the worst thing you ever call me I'll be ok. I have been called MUCH worse!
