free web protection for children

PSA. This is not an advertisement. I know a lil about computers and many of my friends rely on me to assist them with things. Most of them have children, and most of them have no clue how to protect their kids from getting to bad stuff, even accidently, even while they are sitting there next to their kids while they surf. Sure IE has some very basic content killers built in if you bother turning those on, but they are easily shut off again, and not very flexible.

This K9 Web Protection thing is, so far, THE BEST software I have found to protect children from internet crap. Some of what it does:

- automatically blocks many types of questionable content, all of which is allowable by you using an admin password

- allows you to block or allow any web sites you choose

- allows temporary access to sites you choose to allow with admin password

- can not be disabled without the admin password

- can not be uninstalled without the admin password

- heck I even tried to directly delete the software directory and that failed

- installs the blockage at system protocol level so it will block ANY access: Modem, broadband, IE, firefox, AOL etc... it is NOT just made to work in one browser

- if anyone tried tampering with it, it emails you what was being tried

- you can view the history of what was browsed that, again, is admin password protected

The interface is very simple and easy to read and configure - in other words even parents can do it if they understand what the words "Block" and "Allow" mean.

This program is FREE for home use.

I really recommend this to all parents because even though YOUR little Johnny and Susie are perfect and never disobey you, I have never met a kid yet that wasn't getting into trouble on the internet. Seriously.

My disclaimer is, I have not REALLY TRIED hard to defeat this system, and I bet there is a way - I just tried some basic attempts and it passed those wonderfully. And their may be better ones out there too that I didn't find. There are many pay ones, but why bother if this does as good or better?

It's important to me that kids be protected - we don't shove them into traffic and say "Have fun!", we don't leave them downtown late at night and drive away.... the net is 33% great info and 66% porn and worse crap supported... if you are not sitting right next to your children when they surf ["POS" = Parents Over Shoulder in chat speak], then your kids are probably into things they shouldn't be.

This tool helps you confront them and protect them if needed.

1. Fill out the free license sign up page - use your SPAM EMAIL address if it makes you feel better. You DO have an extra email address for online registration and spamming, right? RIGHT?

2. download it

3. install it

4. make up a parent admin password and NEVER let your kids stand near you when you enter it

5. look at the setup and configuration, tweak it

6. reboot and you are done

Hope this helps some people.

I'm sure this will be beneficial to many folks here if they don't already have an app to restrict information.

On a side note.....what makes up the last 1% of the net?

hahahaha the last bit is .3333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333 plus .666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666
equalling .99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 to infinity and is thus not worth calculating but generally equal to the missing "1"
